Persuasion Lead your audience to act in a certain way

Types of Persuasive Speeches:  Policy: Changing a policy or law (A permanent site should be established for the Olympic Games)  Habit: Changing or preventing a bad habit, or picking up a good habit (Eat vegetarian)  Belief: Changing an idea or belief (Big Foot is real)  Value: Changing a personal value (We should buy American cars)

Three sources of persuasion:  Pathos: Driven by personal needs and desires. o Analyze your audience and figure out what they need or want  Ethos: Driven by the character and personality of the speaker. o Establish your competence and confidence. Be sincere. KNOW YOUR TOPIC!!!

Three sources of persuasion:  Logos: Driven by logic. o Whatever you say, IT MUST BE TRUE o Use evidence: Facts and statistics are very strong. o Expert testimony: Tell us WHY the person is an expert.

Be careful when you use:  Loaded Words: words with strong feelings behind them. (terrorist)  Glittering generalities: Put everyone into one positive category. Makes you feel good and included (Nebraskans are beautiful)  Bandwagon appeal: Everyone else is doing it.  Testimonials: Endorsed by the stars

Logical Fallacies: NOT TRUE! DO NOT USE THESE!  Hasty generalization: Put everyone into one negative category (Emos cut themselves)  Name calling: attacking the opposite view (Texas fans are jerks)  Either/Or: Only giving two choices (Either you recycle or your friends will hate you)  False cause & effect: (If you do not recycle our world will explode)
