Defining and searching for the SICI code Presenter: Yoel Kortick

Defining and using SICI code 2 Introduction The SICI number is the Serial Item and Contribution Identifier The SICI number corresponds to ANSI/NISO Z x version 2 Often the SICI number appears printed on an actual journal issue from the publisher

Defining and using SICI code 3 SICI example – the three parts Item : Abstract from Lynch, Clifford A. "The Integrity of Digital Information; Mechanics and Definitional Issues." JASIS 45:10 (Dec. 1994) p SICI : (199412)45: TX;2-M The SICI code is made of three parts: 1.Item segment 2.Contribution Segment 3.Control Segment This example taken from

Defining and using SICI code 4 SICI example – the three parts Item Abstract from Lynch, Clifford A. "The Integrity of Digital Information; Mechanics and Definitional Issues." JASIS 45:10 (Dec. 1994) p SICI (199412)45: TX;2-M Item segment Contribution Segment Control Segment

Defining and using SICI code 5 SICI example – Item Segment Item Abstract from Lynch, Clifford A. "The Integrity of Digital Information; Mechanics and Definitional Issues." JASIS 45:10 (Dec. 1994) p SICI (199412)45: TX;2-M Item segment This is the ISSN for the periodical, in this case the Journal of the American Society for Information ScienceISSN (199412) The chronology part is in parentheses and identifies the date of publication. In this case, it is signified by month and year; December :10 The enumeration part signifies the volume and number; Vol. 45, no. 10.

Defining and using SICI code 6 SICI example – Item Segment This presentation will focus only on the Item Segment This presentation will not focus on the Contribution segment and Control Segment For additional Information see various sources on the Internet including: and

Defining and using SICI code 7 Introduction In the acquisitions/serials module it is possible to search for serials via a variety of parameters when using the SERIAL BAR One of these options is the SICI code

Defining and using SICI code 8 Defining SICI Search The list of search options is defined in the SERIAL- SEARCH section of the ADM $data_tab/pc_tab_exp_field.lng table. Here is the relevant line for SICI search: SERIAL-SEARCH L SICI SICI2

Defining and using SICI code 9 Defining SICI Search When searching by the SICI number, the system looks for all BIB records that match the ISSN part of the SICI number. For every matched BIB record, it will then look for items in the ADM library that match the filter fields (Chronology and enumeration). If the search result is more than one bib record all bib records are displayed (even if they have no matching items). Note: The SICI code is a combination of the ISSN number of the serial as well as the chronology and enumeration of the issue.

Defining and using SICI code 10 Example System number ISSN Title Journal of Information Science

Defining and using SICI code 11 Example Volume 9 Number 4 Year 2007 Month July

Defining and using SICI code 12 SICI example – Item Segment SICI (200707)9:4 Item segment This is the ISSN for the periodical (200707) The chronology part is in parentheses and identifies the date of publication. In this case, it is signified by month and year; July :4 The enumeration part signifies the volume and number; Vol. 9, no. 4. ISSNYear and Month Volume and Issue

Defining and using SICI code 13 SICI example – the search Now we search for the SICI code:

Defining and using SICI code 14 SICI example – the search And it is immediately found:

Defining and using SICI code 15 SICI example – the search It is also possible to search for SICI code without the year and month, thus using only the ISSN and the Volume and Issue ( Enumeration) Here we search for SICI ()9:8

Defining and using SICI code 16 SICI example – the search ()9:8 ISSN: ()9:8 Year and month: Not given in SICI Enumeration: Volume 9, Issue 8

Defining and using SICI code 17 SICI example – the search And it is immediately found:

Defining and using SICI code 18 The SICI creation and storage - summary The SICI is never actually “catalogued” as a specific field in either the item or the bibliographic record. The SICI is being built “on the fly” and does not reside in the Z30 record. The SICI is being built on the fly according to the ISSN and the Enumeration of the specific issue. The SICI is built in accordance with standard international regulations.
