Daily Edit 1.One of the boys in mondays science class finished their experiment early and consequently began writing his report. 2.The goal is to have graduation go as smooth as possible any arrangement different than the ones approved are to be adjusted in homeroom.

Any arrangement different than the ones approved must be adjusted in homeroom. Senior homeroom teachers must make adjustments if the arrangements are different than the arrangements Mr. Bucher approved. Passive voice: The puppy was bought by me. Active voice: I bought the puppy.

Passive voice to active voice Any arrangement that differs from Mr. Bucher’s approved arrangements is to be adjusted in homeroom by senior homeroom teachers. Senior homeroom teachers should adjust any arrangements that differ from Mr. Bucher’s approved arrangements.

Active Sentence: I bought the puppy. Passive sentence: The puppy was bought me. I went to the pet store one day. After the puppy was bought by me, she was so happy! My new dog and I had a fun day in the park.

Symbolism Symbol: Something (that means more than what it is Something concrete that stands for something abstract Appears once or twice in a text, holding deeper meaning Examples of symbols in the film: Hair, fry bread, fire, ash

Motif Similar to symbolism, but more closely tied to theme Something that works to help explain the central idea of a text Occurs consistently throughout the text Examples of motifs in the film: Questioning truth/lies, running away, telling stories

Theme This is the message about life or human nature that the writer presents to the reader There can be more than one theme in a text A theme is always written as an original sentence Example from Smoke Signals Topic: Truth Theme: The honesty of a story is not as important as the truth it ultimately reveals.

How is one of the following motifs connected to a theme? Work with a partner to develop a theme sentence about Smoke Signals. Then describe how one of the following motifs relates to that theme. Motifs: Questioning lies/truth Running away Storytelling

Question Four In your opinion, which form tells this story better, the short story or the film? Why?

How Are These Connected? Poetry: “13/16” Song: “Song of the Sky Loom” Short Story: “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”, “The World on the Turtle’s Back”, “Fox and Coyote, and Whale” Essay: “Indian Education” Film: Smoke Signals

Quick Write: Genre Of the genres we’ve studied so far, which has been most effective? Pick one (poetry, short story, essay, film, or song) and write down: Five traits that makes that genre stand out from the others One sentence explaining why that genre is effective

Genre Posters Travel to the place in the room where that genre is posted Work as a team to create a poster praising that genre Use a marker to write down a word or sentence explaining what makes that genre effective Every person in the group must write down something new, OR add on to what another person in the group has written (try to make sure everyone writes in a different color)

Homework Tomorrow we begin our work with “Survival Stories”, all about individuals who complete odysseys involving nature and the American “wild”. Tonight, read and annotate “To Build a Fire” by Jack London There is also an audio recording of this short story available on my website
