Personal Narrative: Definition A personal narrative identifies, describes, and reflects upon an experience that the writer has had or about which the writer has direct knowledge.

Personal Essays: Focus A personal narrative should have a main idea. For your personal essay, I will require you to state your main idea outright (rather than imply it from the details you provide).

Personal Essays: Purpose The purpose of a personal narrative is to inform the reader about the writer, as well as to entertain the reader.

Personal Essays: Development The writer develops a personal essay by telling a story that illustrates the main idea—but the story has to be true! The writer should also use vivid details, which make the story interesting.

Personal Essays: Organization The writer should organize the information in the essay in a clear pattern. For this assignment, chronological order will work best. The writer should also use precise transitions that show when events are happening in relation to one another.

Personal Essays: Grammar & Style A personal narrative should be free of grammatical errors like fragments and run- on sentences. These are distracting and take away from your ideas. The writer should also be mindful that he or she is using verb tenses correctly, so that there is no confusion about when events are happening!

Homework: Read “Cut” by Bob Greene. It is a good example of a personal essay. You will have a short quiz on it Wednesday so I know everyone read the assignment.
