Servant Leadership & Spirituality of the Youth Minister

Servant Leadership Leading OthersBeing a Servant

Leadership Leadership: the skill of influencing or inspiring others to work enthusiastically toward common goals Force vs. Free will

Question 1: Who is someone that influences or inspires you into action? Someone who you would do anything for? Question 2: What are his/her characteristics?

Can you imagine following a leader who is impatient, unkind, arrogant, disrespectful, selfish, unforgiving, dishonest, and uncommitted? Is that a person who would inspire and influence you to action? Someone who you would sign up to follow?

Being a Servant Humility Respect for others Selflessness Honesty Forgiveness The Golden Rule: Treating others the way he wanted to be treated Jesus is our model.

Servant Leadership Servant leadership is first identifying the needs of the people that we serve and secondly, meeting them.

Question 3: What needs do the youth have? (Think about needs vs. wants)

According to psychology, every teenager has two basic needs: To be valued and to be heard

Servant Leadership Servant leadership is focused on relationships before tasks. When we build relationships with others, we earn respect (as opposed to demanding respect).

Servant leadership is modeling the behavior that we want to see in others. It is the idea that by our example, others will be moved to follow our actions. We cannot change others, we can only change ourselves.

Humility Humility means realizing that we are not always right. It is important to ask feedback from the people that we serve. “Insanity is continuing to do what you’ve always done and hoping for different results.”

Discussion What are the challenges of servant leadership? Have you seen or experienced servant leadership in action? What were the results?

Spirituality of the Youth Minister Mental Health Emotional Health Physical Health Spiritual Health

If we ourselves are running on empty, we are actually doing a disservice to the people that we serve.

We don’t have to do everything on our own. We can ask for help. Who can help us?
