Medical Informatics – Assignment 2 Medical Informatics – Assignment 2 Belfast Link Labs System Stephen, Cathal and Paul

Information. Storing and managing information in an effective and efficient way. All departments- Patient records Blood samples Urinary samples Scans… etc.

Paper vs Electronic ‘Paper’ records occupy a lot of space while electronically stored information occupies relatively little space. Electronic systems allow information to be accessed speedily as opposed to paper based records.

Electronic based systems allow vital information to be altered effectively Electronic system information can be easily ‘backed-up’ in the event of an accident Electronic results can be quickly and efficiently transferred from place to place. Easier un-authorised access in paper based systems compared to password protected electronic systems

Electronic systems In Belfast hospitals from Jan 1999 to Jan 2005 the character based link lab system was in operation, to handle all medical information with respect to patients From Jan 2005 to today the updated intranet web based link lab system is in operation

Character based link lab system. In operation Jan Jan 2005 Initial one day training Password protected (unique) Complex data coding command system All required information displayed on one link page

Intranet web based link lab system Straight forward command protocol User friendly Internet link for searching additional information Also one day training Also password protected

Security. Data protection act 1998 Passwords Secure in-house access Virus protection/fire wall Hierarchy access
