Keeping it safe on the internet Computer safety Proper use of Internet material Copyright guidelines Plagiarism

Computer Safety Be careful with the computer, keyboard, and mouse Be responsible when carrying the laptop to and from your seat

Computer Safety Online Be respectful to you and others when online Do not share your password with anyone because your password is your password! When using online accounts, do not use offensive language or send offensive messages The school can search and read student emails

Computer Safety Online If caught using offensive language online, student will be suspended from the internet and use of computer No bullying/cyberbullying (spreading rumors, calling people names, teasing, or using offensive words on the internet)

Social Networking Dos and Don’ts Do keep your information private! Don’t trust anybody online! Do only friend those you know Don’t pretend to be someone you are not Do know what is allowed and not allowed online.

A Stranger is A Stranger You wouldn’t give your information to a person who comes up to you in a car, so why would you give out information to a person you don’t know online? If they are a stranger offline, then they are a stranger online!

Being Ethical on the Internet When you are being ethical, you are not damaging/hurting others, yourself, or society. You wouldn’t steal a computer game from the store, so do not copy your friend’s computer game or software.

Would you want someone to read a letter you wrote Would you want someone to read a letter you wrote? Would you read someone else’s letter? Being ethical is not reading someone else’s email.

Copyright Guidelines Copyright is a federal law that protects your work or anyone else’s work from being copied, changed, or used without permission. Others have to get permission to use it. Many videos, songs, and games are copyrighted and if someone uses it without permission, it is against the law. Software is copyrighted, so you cannot copy it for your own use. Copying and posting paragraphs from research sites is also against the law if the written work is copyrighted.

Plagiarism What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own. You cannot copy and post paragraphs from cites and call it your own. You cannot change a few words around or use synonyms when copying other people’s work.

Plagiarism Teachers can check to find out if you are stealing other people’s work by using certain methods. Write your own work! I will know if you have just copied it from a cite. If you do want to use a paragraph from a cite, then you need to record where you found the information. This is something we will be learning how to do this year in fourth grade.
