Introduction and Goals: Zisman2 Introduction This is our first meeting at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) —organized by our collaborators at HIT’s Institute of Cryogenics and Superconductivity Technology (ICST) o ICST is fabricating three large diameter coupling coils for the U.S. NFMCC and for MICE Agenda prepared by D. Li, L. Wang, and MZ —with input from session conveners o 5 plenary sessions o 7 parallel sessions o several social events –campus tour –outing –reception –banquet

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman5 Status of Experiment (1) We have made good progress in beam line and detector installation and commissioning —beam line is fully functional o still no correctors or collimators —detectors working properly o as promised Bonesini et al. delivered TOF1 to RAL before spectrometer solenoid arrived –this cost me a bottle of good champagne  which I am very glad to pay off! Two major roadblocks to continued progress —target reliability —decay solenoid availability Resulted in Executive Board decision to close off the DSA and get the decay solenoid debugged and fixed properly —subsequent failure of on-line target reinforced this decision o but, it means no data-taking until May 2009 Status and plans for both will be discussed at this meeting

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman6 Status of Experiment (2) Hardware fabrication is moving forward —but pace is typically slower than hoped for Examples: —first spectrometer solenoid should ship to Fermilab for measurement in next few months o second one to follow 2-3 months later —absorber bodies being fabricated in Japan —absorber window fabrication about to get under way (U.-Mississippi) —focus coil contract has been let and PRR held o still some issues to resolve, but making progress —diffuser mechanism ready for testing —trackers are done and tested —TOF0 and TOF1 both operational —magnetic shielding walls in place and floor is in progress

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman7 Spectrometer Solenoid Magnets being assembled at vendor —magnet 2 will ship first (February or March ’09) —magnet 1 must unfortunately be disassembled to fix various problems Magnet 1 Magnet 2

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman8 Issues (1) Decay solenoid non-operational —quenches at unacceptably low current o making progress at understanding what is wrong –expect to open it soon  either for repair or for additional diagnostics —this is most serious issue (still no full understanding of what is wrong) Target is now non-operational —off-line target failed at ~350,000 cycles —on-line target failed at ~200,000 cycles Plans to build improved target being developed —we need to get at least one ready to test ASAP o “the proof of the pudding is in the testing” [pun intended] No collimators or correctors in beam line

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman9 Issues (2) Other target issues must also be resolved —is Ti the optimum material? —are the present shape and orientation of the target optimal? Controls software effort has lagged due to lack of funds to support Daresbury Lab staff —we are suffering from this now —plan is to create an “on-line” software group (DAQ+Controls) o personal opinion: loss of DL group cannot be fully compensated this way We need to update schedule and planning to accommodate recently-decided shutdown —Alain Blondel will discuss in Plenary Session 3 tomorrow morning Lack of progress on LH 2 R&D system is worrisome —it will hurt us eventually o competition for same expertise as decay solenoid must be resolved

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman10 Goals of Meeting (1) Review our progress toward Phase 1 —status of decay solenoid, target, spectrometer solenoids, FC, RFCC, absorbers, infrastructure, beam line collimators and correctors —implications for experiment schedule o when do we need various items? –TOF2, EMR, RF power source(s), LH 2 system,... —will infrastructure be available when needed? Phase 2 items —RF R&D status (covered at NFMCC meeting at LBNL, January 25-28) —readiness of FC, CC, RF, RF power source o along with required infrastructure, e.g., wall plug power —still need a realistic cost-to-complete from all groups Evaluate implications of MANX experiment on our plan —in terms of resources, schedule,...

January 13, 2009Introduction and Goals: Zisman11 Goals of Meeting (2) Establish and organize on-line group effort —what is needed to complete on-line monitoring task? o requirements on what to monitor, how often, where to keep information –we need to assess how we will operate MICE —on-line reconstruction (run-by-run) o what is needed; who does it? Strategy questions —should tracker be placed in Hall for May run? o with or without spectrometer solenoid? —how critical are the beam line monitors? o do they need particle-by-particle readout? —how do we cover shifts once the first magnet is installed and cold? o do we need someone on-site only when magnet is powered?
