Exposed East Africa to other cultures. Indian Ocean is a trade route for Arabs, Indians, and other Asians.

2,000 years ago Arab traders settled in East Africa. Arabs and East Africans exchanged elements of culture. Swahili, a mixture of Arab and African culture, arose. Live on the coast from Somalia to Tanzania. Language used by many East Africans.

Islam and Christianity are practiced in East Africa. Islam was introduced by Arab traders. Christianity came to Ethiopia from North Africa in the 4th century. Europeans spread Christianity farther in the 1800’s.

Europeans brought the idea of “land ownership” to East Africa. After independence, African governments broke up plantations. Sold land to individual Africans.
