Indian Ocean Connections The Indian Ocean provides trade with Asian countries, exposing them to those cultures. Swahili Culture Swahili is an ethnic group that resulted from mixing African cultures and Arab cultures. Heritage refers to the values, traditions, and customs handed down from their ancestors.

2 Widespread Swahili Language
-Swahili is one of many ethnic groups in East Africa. In Tanzania children are taught Swahili first, then English. This helps to preserve their African heritage. Religion Islam was introduced by Arab traders. The Roman Empire and Europeans brought Christianity.

3 Changing Ideas About Land
mostly rural, people farm and raise livestock Before Land was Owned Before European colonization, the idea of owning land did not exist. Families farmed plots of land for their own use.

4 The Rise and Fall of Plantations
Owning land was introduced by European settlers. British set up plantations. As countries gained independence, the gov. divided plantations and sold land to Africans. Best farmland - Great Rift Valley and the Ethiopian Highlands Conflicts over land have erupted in small countries like Rwanda and Burundi.

5 Where is Home? strong connection to the land or village where their family or clan is from Life in the city is temporary for most. They may work to earn money, but expect to return to their village at some point. African village Nairobi
