Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN) Writing and Learning Across Curriculum Alesha McKnight- RVS

Objective O All teachers present will examine the research behind using ISNs in the classroom. O All teachers present will also explore strategies and tips for incorporating ISNs into different content areas of instructions. O All teachers present will begin creating their own teacher ISN to use in their classrooms.

Gallery O Take a few minutes to explore different student samples of ISNs. O Think about some of the similarities between notebooks. Be prepared to share.

What are Interactive Notebooks O A way for students to personalize and make meaning of the information presented in class O A powerful study tool O A working portfolio O Appeals to multiple intelligences O Encourages pride in student work

Research Based O Interactive notebooks provide students with a way to express and document their learning in a fun and engaging format that appeals to even the most reluctant learners. These simple spiral notebooks are transformed into a valuable resource where students have access to class notes and handouts that have been recorded by students using sketches, bits of writing, or other cues designed to assist recall and demonstrate understanding of the concepts taught.students - Written by eHow Contributor Nannette Richford

Advantages and Disadvantages O Advantages O Help teachers create meaningful lessons O Can touch many multiple intelligences O Help students express their creative side. O Organization O Can be used for formal and informal assessments O Long lasting O Disadvantages O Those who struggle with organization could struggle with the ISN. O Initial organization can be time consuming O Students can lose the ISN if not left in class, or if its importance is not stressed.

Notebook Materials O Spiral Notebook (the bigger the better in most cases) OR a Composition Book O Pencils- led and colored O Highlighters O Glue sticks or Tape O Scissors O Colored paper or cardstock (optional- but really brings the information to life) O No markers- they bleed through the paper

What should I have in the Notebook? O Cover O Table of Contents O Unit Title Pages O Entries O Unit Rubrics

ISN Format 1 O There are many ways an ISN can be used. O Left Side/Right Side (AKA Input/Output)

ISN Format 2 O Working Portfolio O The processing goes on the same page with the teacher guided activity. O The best part is, and ISN can really be used any way you want it to be!

Assessing the ISN O To keep students accountable, you can assess their learning formally and informally in the ISN. O Check the notebooks at the end of each unit (minimum) O Use a rubric for the student to self-assess, then you assess. O Keep an outstanding ISN from year to year so the students can see the expectation.

Tips for Success O If at first you don’t succeed…… O In order for students to be successful this requires a lot of modeling. O Don’t rush the process (especially the first time). O Don’t be afraid to send it home…. But it would probably be less stress for both you and the student for them to keep the ISN at school O Start in one subject area first. O Keep your teacher notebook up to date to help absent kids.

O Fill in the table of contents as you go, and keep it up on a board consistently. O Number your pages at the beginning. O Show students how they can use this as a study guide, and reward hard work. O Questions?
