4 SUPPLY DEMAND TDM to optimize our transportation system and resources Adding infrastructure alone is expensive and not a sufficient and sustainable solution

5 How to move forward with the TDM concept? Build awareness on TDM to gauge interest and scout champions –Identify stakeholders: Senior Management Staff from other departments/division to build synergy Councillors/politicians Partners/Stakeholders – e.g. federal government, province, neighbouring municipalities, institution, private sector, NGOs & interest groups Identify a catalyst to move TDM forward –Funding opportunity (e.g. FCM, Transport Canada, etc.) –Develop a pilot project –Stakeholders who can be champions Politician Company or Institution Organize workshop/forum to engage stakeholder participation

6 How to move forward with the TDM concept? (cont’d) Create the desire to participate in TDM project –Understand the stakeholders needs –Inform them how TDM can help to address their particular concerns (e.g. environmental, health, financial, employee recruitment/retention, congestion, parking) –Financial incentive (e.g. grants to implement TDM) Provide the knowledge & ability to implement TDM –Provide resources (e.g. form TMA) to help employers to develop employee trip reduction program based on their circumstances develop a plan and strategy –Help them to implement employee commute option strategy to achieve the desire changes

7 How to move forward with the TDM concept? (cont’d) Providing Reinforcement –Celebrate success stories –Report to Council –Organize events –On going communication –Monitor progress through quantifiable indicators

8 Formalize TDM in the Planning Process Incorporate TDM policies in Official Plan, Transportation Plan or other relevant policy documents –Develop a TDM plan –Develop TDM polices in Official Plan Incorporate TDM policies in Official Plan, Transportation Plan or other relevant policy documents Explore continuous funding to support TDM –Create a budget item for TDM –Work with other levels of government Develop work plan to implement TDM strategy
