1 st Semester 1 - Number System Fluency 2 - Rate, Ratio & Proportional Reasoning 3 - Expressions 4 - One-Step Equations & Inequalities 5 - Area & Volume 2 nd Semester 6 - Statistics 7 - Rational Explorations 8 - Operations with Rational Numbers 9 - Expressions & Equations 10 - Ratios & Proportional Relationships 11 - Review and Extend Math 6 / 7 Objectives 2015 – 2016 Mathematics Syllabus 6 th Grade – Mrs. K. Nelson Welcome to 6 th Grade Math! I look forward to working with each of you. I know we are going to have an exciting, interesting, and fulfilling year together. This is OUR classroom. We are a team. We must work together in order to achieve our goals. My goals are to teach you the Georgia Standards of Excellence, provide a safe, nurturing, and interesting environment, and get you to LOVE MATH as much as I do. Your goals should be to succeed in math, get along with your peers, and to come to class prepared with a positive attitude. I have high expectations for all of you. I KNOW we are going to have a fantastic year together! I believe that clear guidelines will prevent future problems and miscommunications throughout the school year. Rules provide a safe and effective learning environment and procedures are necessary for an efficient, well-managed, and organized classroom. Behavior rewards will be given to reinforce positive behaviors and behavior consequences will be administered according to Tapp’s demerit system. By the end of the year, students in this course will have covered the entire 6 th grade math curriculum, as well as the first half of the 7 th grade math curriculum. Math 6/7 students will: understand the four arithmetic operations as they relate to rational numbers, including signed numbers; compute with different forms of rational numbers; understand the concept of ratio and solve problems using proportional reasoning; determine the surface area and volume of solid figures; and use variables to represent unknown quantities in formulae, algebraic expressions, equations, and inequalities. You will find all relevant standards at Grading Accelerated Placement: Students must maintain an 85% test average to continue on the advanced content track into Accelerated Math 7/8 next year. Students must have an 85% test average by the end of the semester (18 week grading period), or the student will be placed on probation. This probation continues for at least 18 weeks with an intervention plan developed and implemented. If the grade remains below an 80% following probation and intervention, seventh grade placement will be affected.

Math Survival Guide Expectations The purpose of the Math Survival Guide (MSG) is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Math Survival Guides (MSG) will be used for class notes as well as for other activities in which students will be asked to express their own ideas and process the information presented in class. Students will be expected to maintain this organization tool throughout the year. Reassessment Policy: In the event a student does not show mastery of the standards on a summative assessment he or she will be given the opportunity to rework / retake the assessment to demonstrate a better understanding of the content and achieve a higher score. In order to rework / retake a summative assessment the student must complete a retake contract which will require a parent signature. The student will have one week from the time the contract is given to complete the assignments on the contract and schedule their retake. The contract will specify what the student has to do in order to rework / retake the assessment along with submission dates for all required assignments. If the student fails to complete all of the key components of the retake contract he or she will forfeit the opportunity to retake the test. Please check synergy for student’s grades: Demonstrate Tapp P.R.I.D.E. Personal Best, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Effort. Come to class on time and ready to start. Make sure your homework is out, your agenda has been completed, and begin your Success Starter. Classroom Expectations If you are absent please check the blog. You can also check with a friend or me. All missed work should be made up promptly. Homework Policy: Research indicates that schools in which homework is routinely assigned and assessed tend to have higher achieving students. Homework fosters student achievement, independence and responsibility. It serves as a vital link between school and home. Therefore, we will assign homework that is meaningful and required. Students are required to ask questions to clarify homework assignments before leaving class; complete and submit homework assignments by the due date and complete all assignments honestly in accordance with teacher directions.  Basic 4 Function Calculator  Two 3-prong folders  Pencils and Erasers  Math Textbook (needed daily)  Composition Notebook  Notebook Paper Supplies For Class THIS SYLLABUS IS A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE TO ACCOMMODATE STUDENT NEEDS.
