What is life?

Mr. Morris’s 1 st Grade Science Class

Objectives; To understand what life needs to survive To know what's alive, and what's not To see how the Earth, and our taking care of it, is important.

What is life?

Life is anything that’s alive Can you name some things that are alive?

Life needs a few important things to exist; Food Air A place that supports life Shelter Water

Water lets living organisms cool down when they are hot, and to move food through their bodies. Water also makes it so organisms can move. Wate r

Food Food makes it so living organisms can grow and have energy to move.

Air You can’t see it, but you breathe in air all of the time! All living creatures need air to survive, and all of the parts of a organism need air too!

Shelter Every living thing needs a place that protects them from danger! Some creatures carry a home with them, like a… Snail ! Other animals need to find a shelter or make one. People live in houses, what other animals make shelters?

A place that supports life The most important thing for life to exist is a place that has water, air, food, and shelter. For all of us, that place is… EARTH!

That's why its so important to take care of Earth, all of the life we know of needs it to survive! What are some things you can do to help our planet Earth?

Some organisms may not seem alive at first, but if you see that they eat, breath and need water, then you will know they are alive! Lets see if YOU can tell what's alive, and what's not!

THAT’S RIGHT! It breaths! It drinks water It eats!

Great Job! Lets try some more;

Super Job! Now for some hard one’s!

Now you know what life is, and what it needs to survive! Right now, Earth is the only place we know of that can support life, so it’s each and every one of our jobs to take care of it!

Think about it! Does it need water? Does it breath? Does it eat? Some things seem like they are alive, but they are not.
