1 Natural Sciences Grade 7
Term 4: Planet Earth & Beyond Relationship of the Sun to the Earth

2 Topic 1 Relationship of the Sun to the Earth
Solar energy and life on Earth Natural Sciences - Grade 7

3 Natural Sciences - Grade 7
Images of life on Earth Natural Sciences - Grade 7

4 Solar energy from the Sun
Each plant contains food [starch and sugar]. The Sun is km away from the Earth [Earth is the 3rd planet from the Sun; if we were further, we would freeze and if we were closer, we would burn up. There is no other life on other planets because it is too hot or too cold] The Sun’s heat and energy travels through space and reach Earth to sustain life. There would not be any life on Earth without the Sun. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

5 Solar energy from the Sun
The Sun’s heat gives the animals the necessary energy to survive. Animals eat the food that plants produce. Humans eat plants and animals and are classified as omnivores. [vegetarians do not eat animals] Natural Sciences - Grade 7

6 The water cycle depends on the Sun’s energy
Water is needed by everything living thing on Earth. It is not possible to make water. Water is recycled through the water cycle which is driven by the Sun’s heat. The recurring water movement from the Earth’s surface into the air and back to the Earth’s surface, forms the water cycle. Natural Sciences - Grade 7

7 The water cycle depends on the Sun’s energy
It is made possible through the Sun’s heat energy. The earth’s water would freeze and it would not evaporate [turns from liquid into vapour] without the Sun’s heat energy. Natural Sciences - Grade 7
