  Imagine your cousin was the King of England. He promised you the throne. When he died, he gave the throne to someone else. Write 3 to 5 sentences explaining how you would feel. Bellwork

  I can evaluate the events that led up to the Norman Invasion  So that I can understand the impact of the reign of William the Conqueror on England and Northern France  I will know I have it when Objectives

  In 1066 the last Anglo-Saxon king Edward the Confessor died  Problem he had no kids  Two men claimed that Edward had promised them the throne  William, Duke of Normandy (a distant cousin)  Harold Godwinson (brother in law)  Had the backing of Witan (a council of English lords) The Problem

  Harald Hardrada, a Viking, wanted to take the throne (encouraged by Tostig Godwinson)  Invaded England  Harold took his army to fight the Vikings  Harald was killed  William seeing his chance invaded England from the South  Harold immediately took his army to meet William Meanwhile

  William defeated Harold easily  Harold was killed when he was shot in the eye with an arrow  On Christmas Day William was crowned King of England William the Conqueror

  Took most English titles from the Anglo-Saxons and gave them to his Normans  Normans became the ruling class  Old nobles were now peasants  Problem: William was French (he didn’t speak English)  He tried to learn as did his fellow Normans  Because of this the English language was changed to include French words William the King

  Created a census book which listed every man, woman, and animal in England  Known as the Domesday Book  First census taken since the collapse of the Roman Empire  Was used for centuries to determine land rights  Was best census taken until the 1900s William’s Legacy

  Every ruler of England can trace their ancestry back to him  He is credited with making England a world power William’s Legacy
