1 The Norman Invasion of England
The Battle of Hastings October 14, 1066

2 Who Should Be King of England After Edward the Confessor?
Contestant #2 Contestant #1 Edward named Harold Godwinson as king just before he died. The strong and important men of England chose Harold to be their king too! He was English but he wasn't related to Edward. BUT Harold had already promised William of Normandy that he would help him to become king of England when Edward died. The nearest relative was a boy called Edgar. He was only eight years old! He was young and he was English but how would he fight wars and run the country? He’s King Edward’s Brother-In-Law! He’s just a kid!

3 Who Should Be King of England After Edward the Confessor?
Contestant #3 Contestant #4 William, Duke of Normandy came from France. He wanted to be king of England. He had visited England and Edward agreed to name him as the new king when he died. Harold had been made to promise William that he could be king when Edward died but Harold did not take the promise seriously and became king when Edward died. William was not related to Edward either! Harald Hardrada the King of Norway felt he should have been king of England too! His family had been kings of England before Edward. There was no one to replace Edward so Harald wanted the crown of England for himself. He too was not related to Edward! He’s a Viking! He’s related to Rollo!

19 Here King Harold Dies!

20 King Harold Dies But, how exactly did he die?
It is not certain how Harold died. The Bayeux Tapestry shows a soldier with an arrow near his eye but the soldier does not appear to be wounded as he is standing up. If he had been killed it would have shown him falling to the ground. This is the reason why most people now think that Harold is the man on the right with the battle axe. He has been struck down by a blow from the Norman knight on horseback. It seems more likely that Harold was killed by a blow from a sword. Above the picture are the Latin words HIC HAROLD REX INTERFECTUS EST, which means HERE KING HAROLD HAS BEEN KILLED.
