You teach 8th grade art. Sabrina is a girl in your class. Last week you saw Sabrina and Dylan holding hands in the hall. Today they're sitting across the room from each other. Sabrina has created a provocative collage with a repeating broken-heart image. When you compliment it, she says, "You don't have to lie. I know it sucks." She starts tearing it up. What do you do?

Sabrina may need help developing: 1.Emotional understanding 2.Responding to the emotions of others 3.Self-motivation 4.Emotions in relationships

You could privately say... 1."You need to control yourself better." 2."Do you want to talk about it?" 3."Middle school relationships never last." 4."Do you really think you're old enough for a relationship?"

You teach 7th grade physical education. Curtis is a boy in your class. In his file, the elementary school PE teacher praised Curtis' basketball skills. You observed Curtis play basketball in your class and he didn't seem to be trying his best. When you talk with him after class privately, he says, "Look at me. I'm not going to be tall enough for the NBA, so why even bother?" What do you do?

Curtis may need help developing: 1.Emotional understanding 2.Responding to the emotions of others 3.Emotional regulation 4.Self-motivation

You could privately say... 1."Do you like playing basketball?" 2."If you play hard enough, height doesn't matter." 3."You're too young to worry about your future." 4."Are you sure you're done growing?"

You teach 8th grade math. Carlos is a friendly boy in your class. Carlos is ahead of his peers in math ability. In collaboration with the Talented and Gifted Coordinator, you've made Carlos an unofficial TA. Most students respond well to Carlos' help. Carlos is helping Gabriela with a story problem about firing a cannonball. Gabriela suddenly starts sobbing uncontrollably. You remember that her big sister is serving in Afghanistan. Carlos looks confused and panicked. What do you do?

Carlos may need help developing: 1.Emotional understanding 2.Responding to the emotions of others 3.Emotional regulation 4.Emotions in relationships

You could privately say... 1."When you're upset, what helps you?" 2."You need to be more careful." 3."There's nothing you can do to help." 4."How do you think Gabriela feels?"
