Multimedia 4 30 credit module Semester 1 concentrates on 2D Presentation Portfolio In-class test Semester 2 moves on to 3D Presentation Portfolio In-class test

Multimedia 5 Learning Outcomes To research and critically evaluate existing 2D and 3D multimedia applications. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of fundamental 2D and 3D multimedia concepts and theories and their expression in digital media. To devise methods to manage and solve non- trivial problems in the development and distribution of 2D and 3D multimedia applications.

Multimedia 6 Directed reading Semester 1 Chapman N and Chapman J (2004). Digital Multimedia, Second Edition. London. Wiley. ISBN: Semester 2 Giambruno M, (2002) 3D Graphics & Animation, 2nd Edition, New Riders, ISBN:

Multimedia 7 Independent study The lectures are to cover theory As level H students you are expected to be independent learners Prepare for your presentation Learn the software using the Help/How Do I that come with that particular application Work on your portfolio Spare lab time 4.00 – 6.00 Thursday

Multimedia 8 Software in FML 409 2D Flash Fireworks Internet Explorer Cool Edit 3D 3ds max version7 Plus various plugins

Multimedia 9 Assessment 2 Presentations20% 10% each Portfolio 40% Broken down into a number of components 2 In-class 40% 10% each

Multimedia 10 Presentation 1 Working in groups of 3 you are each to research a multimedia application with a common theme: Content, music, entertainment or education Delivery method, CD, Internet, Game console. Your ability to research (individual), critically evaluate (group) and draw conclusions (group) will be assessed See the module guide for marking criteria

Multimedia 11 Presentation assessment criteria You should demonstration of a critical awareness of the role of software, the techniques used, the hardware used, the development team and the end use of the application. You should draw your own conclusion as the success, technical complexity and visual impact of the application.

Multimedia 12 Presentations Your presentations should last 10 minutes You should submit the print-out of your presentation (3 slides to a page) to your tutor along with an electronic copy It should include screen shots of the applications and be fully referenced

Multimedia 13 Groupwork As level H students you should be used to working in groups. You are free to form your own working groups, but if there are people left over they will be assigned to groups by your tutor. It is Departmental policy that that students enter in a partnership contract with each other for any piece of assessed group work. Submission of group work assessment should always have a clear statement of the work that each student has undertaken. You should meet regularly and minutes of meetings must be taken to provide evidence of problems in each group. See Appendix A on Groupwork

Multimedia 14 Activity Get yourselves into groups Think about a subject

Multimedia 15 Portfolio You are to build a multimedia application over the two semesters Your application will be built up in a number of stages; A number of small steps the assessment is formative, for feedback to your tutor will carry a nominal mark 2 main submissions work handed into the office carry the majority of the marks

Multimedia 16 To get a better portfolio mark You need to use or apply something not taught on the module You need to tell me in your documentation Your documentation must be informed by literature critical

Multimedia 17 Portfolio task You are to make a Flash application about the BBC computer and the production of your movie. Computer History hist7 (2005)

Multimedia 18 Portfolio should contain: Content about the computer, photographs, text, music of the era. An animation Scanned images of your storyboards and navigation charts Sample media dictionary Critical analysis of your application and an outline of future work required, maximum 500 words A movie of a model the computer (added at for the second submission) A link to a real-time model of the computer (added at for the second submission) Critical comparison of 2D and 3D, your own application and an outline of future work required (added at for the second submission) maximum 500 words References

Multimedia 19 Discussion what is multimedia? In groups write down a definition of multimedia

Multimedia 20 Multimedia defined “The use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated way.” Webopedia (2005) “…any combination of two or more media, represented in a digiatl form, sufficiently well integrated to be presented via a single interface, or manipulated by a single computer program.” Chapman N and Chapman J (2004)

Multimedia 21 Multimedia delivery What is meant by online and offline delivery? Have you accessed either in the last 7 days? What? What are the differences for the user?

Multimedia 22 Non-linearity exercise Two models in use: Page-based Time-based Draw a diagram of each

Multimedia 23 Interactivity “Interactivity empowers the end users or your project by letting them control the content and flow of information” Vaughan T. (2003) If there are 4 choices at 5 different stages, how many branches must be programmed? How many possible experiences offered? Chapman N and Chapman J (2004)

Multimedia 24 Interactivity discussion Give examples of how interactivity is used, giving examples of page-based and time-based models

Multimedia 25 User interfaces What elements can you expect in an interface? Are there now conventions for use? What influences their design?

Multimedia 26 Social and Ethical Considerations When you create some multimedia, consider Who is going to use your application? Will they have the right hardware? Will they need/have a connection? Will the connection be the right connection? Will they have any physical disabilities? Will the content be controlled? Why? Chapman N and Chapman J (2004)

Multimedia 27 Some exercises Scenario: You have been asked by Hope to create an Information Kiosk for use by new students List and describe the users you would expect to use this feature What features of multimedia can be used in an Information Kiosk? Describe how designing for different users groups would affect your multimedia application Describe the differences between page based and time based media and give examples of how you would use each

Multimedia 28 For Next Week Directed Reading Chapman N and Chapman J (2004). Digital Multimedia, Second Edition. London. Wiley. ISBN: Chapter 1 Introduction Chapter 2Enabling Technologies Independent study Finalise your groups Work on your presentation Get to know Flash

Multimedia 29 What have we covered today? Introduced the module Discussed your presentation Discussed what is multimedia Any questions?
