26 February 2014 Views to practical support on management of HELCOM biodiversity data by an EU Service contract Hermanni Kaartokallio (SYKE) EEA workshop Options for reporting of MSFD biodiversity indicators Deltares (Netherlands), lead AZTI (Spain ) HCMR (Greece) SYKE (Finland)

Framework EU Service contract: Development of a shared data and information system between the EU and the Regional Sea Conventions (phase 1) Lead DELTARES Seven tasks of which Task 6 specifically targeted at development related to HELCOM work (Lead SYKE) Duration approx. 1 year, ending by Feb 2015

Task 6: Pilot of model and work plan for HELCOM Assisting HELCOM in their ongoing work and testing the elements of Marine information Schema (MIS) developed in the contract 1.Operationalization of HELCOM assessments (HELCOM EUTRO-OPER) 2.Setting up a HELCOM biodiversity portal including making available the HELCOM RED LIST data. 3.Reflect on the other tasks to pilot the relevant aspects of marine information schema

HELCOM biodiversity data portal

Biodiversity data portal elements 1.Species distributional data 2.Habitat/Biotope data 3.Links to external portals (e.g. EEA) 4.Data/metadata download capabilities Following MIS structure (3 levels:DPSIR framework, regulatory units, data/management) 1.Pressures/impacts 2.Assessment status

HELCOM biodiversity data portal The biodiversity data presented in the portal originates from diverse sources and is compiled by HELCOM for assessment purposes. Data origin & other relevant information is described in the associated metadata. No common data base or agreed format so far. However, the data is available in shapefile format and has certain common data fields. All data is available through INSPIRE compliant OGC WMS interface and can be viewed in other map services.

HELCOM biodiversity data portal Portal developed by HELCOM with direct input from the task 6 to following areas > Making available RED LIST data > Metadata description > Portal structure > INSPIRE compliance for viewing data (OCG WMS) > Technical implementation Based on HELCOM Map and Data Service The examples below are provisional

Map service overview

RED LIST: species distribution (fishes)

Metadata & Download Metadata description available next to the species/other data layers Download possible as a shapefile (.zip)- under construction for species data

RED LIST: species distribution (birds)

RED LIST: Habitats

Habitats overlaid with MPAs

Monitoring: coastal fish surveys

Assessment: Biodiversity status+ Species data

Benthic marine landscapes+ benthic species

Pressures: bird hunting+ important bird areas

Pressures: Baltic Sea Pressure Index + Species data

Viewing data in an external service

Viewing external (EEA) data in HELCOM service

Task 6: Pilot of model and work plan for HELCOM To be done: > Input to finalization of Biodiversity map and data service > INSPIRE Compliance/technical implementation (e.g. Data download) > Testing common data format on HELCOM biodiversity data (ODV Biology, Darwin Core) > Envisioning possible data anagement structure for HELCOM biodiversity core indicators with a view to MIS and european data infrastructures.
