Classification Levels KINGDOM PHYLUM CLASS ORDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES “King Phillip Came Over For Grape Soda”

KINGDOMS  Plantae  Animalia  Monera (prokaryotes)  Protista (includes algae)  Fungi

KINGDOM CHARACTERISTICS Plantae: -Usually green -Use photosynthesis to make energy

KINGDOM CHARACTERISTICS Animalia: -complex -multicellular -most can move -most have nervous systems -even single- celled lack cell walls

KINGDOM CHARACTERISTICS Monera: -prokaryotic, single-celled -2 kinds: archaebacteria eubacteria

KINGDOM CHARACTERISTICS Protista: -unlike Monera: they are eukaryotic -different kinds of organisms: some are plant-like, some animal-like, some fungis-like -most are unicellular

KINGDOM CHARACTERISTICS Fungi: -first thought to be plants, but do not conduct photosynthesis -do not eat food like animals -absorb nutrients from their surroundings after breaking them down with digestive juices -examples are mushrooms, mold, and yeast

Terms to Know: 1. taxonomy – the science of identifying, naming, and classifying living things 2. dichotomous key – an aid for identifying unknown organisms that consists of several pairs of descriptive statements 3. eubacteria – many species of bacteria found in the Kingdom Monera that includes E. coli 4. archaebacteria – many species of bacteria found in the Kingdom Monera that thrive in extreme environments

HUMANS KINGDOM Animalia PHYLUM Chordata (vertebrate) CLASS Mammalia (mammal) ORDER Primate FAMILY Hominidae GENUS Homo SPECIES Homo sapien (man)

These levels of classification are all based on evolutionary principles. The groups that you are placed into make you related to apes and supposedly inferior humans from billions of years ago. God loves you so much that he made humans to be special and unique…not just a smarter monkey. So be proud of who you are and how God made you!
