1 BELLRINGER FOR 9/25/12 IN YOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE AT THE TOP OF PAGE _37_make a chart: DOMAINS ARCHAEA BACTERIA EUKARYA

2 DOMAINS AND KINGDOMS

3 You have learned the 7 levels of classification:
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus species

4 There is another category that includes even more organisms:
DOMAIN Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus species

5 There are 3 domains: Archaea Bacteria Eukarya

6 Domain Archaea Has cells with no nucleus Are unicellular
Are prokaryotes Can survive in extreme environments Includes the kingdom: archaea (or archaebacteria)

7 Domain: bacteria Its cells have no nucleus Are unicellular
Are prokaryotes Are smaller than eukaryotic cells Includes the kingdom: bacteria (or eubacteria)

8 Domain: eukarya Has cells that contain a nucleus
Are unicellular or multicellular Are eukaryotes Its cells are large with complex structures It includes the kingdoms: Animalia Plantae Fungi Protista

9 There are two types of organisms:
There are two types of organisms: Those with eukaryotic cells, the eukaryotes Those with prokaryotic cells, the prokaryotes Four kingdoms Two kingdoms Archaea Bacteria prokaryotic

10 Kingdom: ARCHEAE All organisms are unicellular Prokaryotes
They have NO nucleus Live in extreme environments

11 Kingdom: BACTERIA All organisms are unicellular
All are prokaryotes with NO nucleus

12 Kingdom: PROTISTA A very diverse kingdom
Most organisms are unicellular Are eukaryotes Cells have a nucleus Organisms can be plant-like, animal-like or fungus-like

13 Kingdom: FUNGI Organisms are mostly multicellular
Eukaryotes with a nucleus Have a cell wall Absorb nutrients

14 Kingdom: PLANTAE All organisms are multicellular Are eukaryotes
Cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts Plants make their own food (photosynthesis)

15 Kingdom: ANIMALIA All organisms are multicellular They are eukaryotes
Cells have a nucleus but NO cell wall Usually move freely Obtain energy by eating food
