Realizing the underexploited potential of multi-purpose legumes towards improved livelihoods and a better environment in crop- livestock systems in East & Central Africa LegumeCHOICE Year 3 planning meeting, Nairobi

Meeting Objectives Take stock on project progress: achievements/gaps towards milestones, identifying challenges faced and anticipated Plan activities for the remaining project timeframe Discuss status of students projects and linkage between them and with other activities.

Guiding questions for the discussion on indicators progress For each indicator of an output activity: 1.Has the indicator been achieved? If yes: descript what has been done? 2.Is the indicator still being addressed? If yes: indicate how and what is still remaining 3.If not to 1 and 2: 1.Reasons for which the indicator has not been addressed 2.What can be done to achieve the indicator within the remaining project

1.(i) Farming system diagnosis and related entry points for multi-purpose legumes in farming systems and synthesis of lessons learnt across all Action Sites [ICRAF] 2.(ii) A suite of proven, farmer- and system-specific legume-based options for system intensification [IITA/UniHoh/NARS] 3.(iii) LegumeCHOICE – a decision support framework for enhancing the contributions of legumes to farmer livelihoods [ILRI] 4.(iv) Effective partnerships within Humidtropics R4D platforms facilitate and enabling environment for the dissemination of multi-purpose legumes [IITA/Humidtropics] Outputs

Output 1 Indicators QuarterYear1 April 2014-March 2015 Year 2 April 2015-March 2016 Year 3 April 2016-March Farming system reports available for at least 6 action sites At least 2 entry points per action sites for multi- purpose legumes documented 3 4Main lessons learnt summarized Farming system diagnosis and related entry points for multi-purpose legumes in farming systems and synthesis of lessons learnt across all action sites

Output 1: Activity Indicators Activity 1 Farm level diagnosis of current functions Activity 2 Analysis of overall production environment Activity 3 Identification of gender typology specific entry points Activity 4 Synthesis of lesson learnt in relation to legume intensification Tools for assessing current functions are available Analyses of secondary information Tools for participatory identification of entry points and farmers visioning available Standard tools for capturing major entry lessons available for use by R4D platform partners Quantification of the current contribution of most relevant legumes Tools for implanting value chain analyses Interactions with stakeholder groups to reach consensus on anticipated entry points Lessons across all sites synthesized and fed back to the Humidtropics Database on soil and plant parameters for evaluating potential of tested legumes GIS mapping of larger scale production environment characteristics

Output 2 Indicators QuarterYear1 April 2014-March 2015 Year 2 April 2015-March 2016 Year 3 April 2016-March Best practices for enhancing legume productivity for different classes of legumes are assembled and ready for use by partners 3 4At least 4500 farmers across all sites have been actively engaged in intensifying legume production within their systems A suite of proven, farmer and system specific legume-based options for system intensification

Output 2: Activity Indicators Activity 1 Participatory action research to quantify optimization of identified legumes Activity 2 Ex-ante assessment of longer-term sustainability of interventions Activity 3 Compilation of best-fit legume interventions and required conditions Activity 4 Facilitation of degree- related capacity building Detailed literature study on past experience Identification of simulation model tools for assessing long-term Tools for designing and analyzing farm-level interventions At least 2PhD and 7 MSc projects are identified Field campaigns to determine best practices for enhancing legumes Improve soil fertility and competition modules of the models Database with best practices for different legume classes within a GxExM framework At least 2PhD and 7 MSc theses delivered in a timely manner Databases with information obtained from field campaigns 30 year simulation to assess long-term impacts of decision on soil productivity fertility and ecosystem functions at plot, farm and landscape

Output 3 Indicators QuarterYear1 April 2014-March 2015 Year 2 April 2015-March 2016 Year 3 April 2016-March A prototype version of LegumeCHOICE is available for use by at least 4 partners in R4D platforms A user-friendly Version 1 version 1 LegumeCHOICE is officially released LegumeCHOICE-a decision support framework for enhancing the contributions of legumes to farmer livelihoods
