Kindergarten Parent Meeting August 11, 2009

KINDERGARTEN Kindergarten is a big adjustment from Pre-K. Students should begin developing more independence. Students are required to sit for longer periods of instructional time.

Assessment Sight Word Recognition Mid-Term Reports Report Cards GKIDS

Sight Word Recognition Sight words are words that are most common when reading. Students are expected to know each word automatically. Highlighted words will be assessed every other Friday. In order to successfully learn these words, students cannot sound out these words.

Mid-Term Reports These reports are sent during the third week of each six weeks grading period. Skills that have not been mastered by your child will be highlighted. All behavior problems will be listed on this report. The number of sight words your child has mastered will also be listed.

Report Cards Every six weeks, your child will receive a report card. The Kindergarten report card is a skills based report card created using our state standards. Each six weeks, you will receive a list of the skills that we are working on. Instead of letter grades, we mark student progress by the following criteria: S (satisfactory), N (needs improvement), U (unsatisfactory).

GKIDS Georgia Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills Based on the Georgia Performance Standards Indicator of first grade readiness

Reading Jack and Jilly Sight Words

Math Houghton Mifflin Hands on Interactive Lessons Daily Calendar Skills Daily Math Music

Best of the Bunch Special program at the end of each six weeks recognizing students’ behavior and academic achievements. Awards are given for the following: Reading, Math, Perfect Attendance, Citizenship (girl and boy), Art, and Handwriting.

Homework Folder Behavior Calendar must be initialed each night Sight Word Assessment Sheet to be initialed every other weekend. All notes sent to me should be placed in your child’s folder. Put any money sent to school in an envelope labeled with your child’s name and place in folder. Book bags must be checked and cleaned out each night!

Additional Information Car rider students must be here by 7:45 in order to eat breakfast in the lunchroom. Students are tardy if they arrive after 8:00. Leaving before 11:30 is considered absent. Parents must call before 11:30 to make changes regarding their child’s afternoon transportation. Scholastic book orders will be sent home monthly. This is strictly voluntary. Please help your child learn to tie his shoes or buy velcro. (safety issue)

Thanks for Coming! Working together as a team we can help your child succeed in kindergarten this year!
