The Early Empire I.The Emperor Augustus Began a period of 200 years of peace and prosperity in Rome. Pax Romana- “Roman Peace” began with Augustus in 27 B.C. and lasted until A.D Became emperor in 27 B.C. Built a permanent professional army. Praetorian Guard- special unit of 9000 men, Added land- Spain, Gaul, No. Europe. Rebuilt Rome- palaces, fountains, marble. Arts flourished. Imported grain from Africa to feed poor. Improved government- Proconsuls in provinces. Reformed tax system- tax collectors. Reformed legal system- laws in provinces. A.What did Augustus Achieve?

B. Who Came After Augustus? Augustus died in A.D. 14. Julio-Claudian Emperors: descended from Caesar and Augustus. –Tiberius- military leader, economy stable. –Caligula- mentally ill and made his horse consul, killed by his own guards. –Claudius- conquered Britain, building projects. –Nero- killed his mother, fiddled while Rome Burned, persecuted Christians, committed suicide, but also assisted in disasters and gave slaves rights. II. Unity & Prosperity After Nero Rome passes through a period of disorder. Vespasian- restored order, and built the Colosseum- Flavian Amphitheatre. Titus- ruled through two disasters- Pompeii and a great fire and also defeated the Jews.

The Good Emperors A.D series of good rulers, creates as era of prosperity when agriculture flourished, trade increased, and the standard of living rose. –Nerva- reformed land laws and taxes. –Trajen- expanded the empire to largest size. –Hadrian- built Hadrian’s Wall in Britain, made laws easier to understand. –Antoninus Pius- promoted the arts, laws for orphans. –Marcus Arelius- reformed the law, united the empire economically. B. A Unified Empire Hadrian set the empire’s northern boundaries at the Rhine River and Danube River. Built Hadrian’s wall Britain to keep out the Picts & Scots. Large empire unified by Roman law & rule, and a shared identity, all free people were citizens. Common languages- Latin and Greek.

C. A Booming Economy Most people made a living farming and produced grapes and olives for wine and oil, or grain in Britain and Egypt. Industry - produced pottery, jewelry, cloth, glass, bronze, and brass. Trade- luxury goods, silk and spices from China and India, and raw materials from Britain, Spain, and Gaul. D. Roads and Money Romans built a good transportation network: 50,000 miles of roads. Ports and a navy helped trade on the seas. Common currency- coins accepted throughout empire. Standard weights and measures- helped trade. E.Ongoing Inequality Many Romans lives improved, but Most city dwellers and farmers remained poor. Still used too many slaves.
