PRESENTATION ON IDENTIFYING USES and USERS of POPULATION and HOUSING CENSUS DATA BY: JOSEPH A. FARKOLLIE REGIONAL COORDINATOR, LIBERIA INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS & GEO- INFORMATION SERVICES (LISGIS) LIBERIA, WEST AFRICA

BACKGGROUND In Liberia, we experienced 14 years of civil war which created a setback for the conduct of Population and Housing Census since it was last conducted in After the war crisis, Liberia conducted her first post war Population and housing Census in 2008 and will be conducted after every 10 years in Liberia. Hence, the next conduct of Population and Housing Census will be in 2018.

Uses of Census: Census is used for the following: 1.In the demarcation of constituencies and the allocation of representatives at the Legislation or Parliament. 2.Detailed information on the geographical distribution of the population. 3.Certain aspects of the legal or administrative status of territorial divisions may also depend on the size of their populations;

4. Census is used for Research purposes. In addition to serving specific governmental policy purposes, the population census provides indispensable data for the scientific analysis and appraisal of the composition, distribution and past and prospective growth of the population.

5. The changing patterns of urban/rural concentration, the development of urbanized areas, the geographical distribution of the population according to such variables as occupation and education. 6. The evaluation of the sex and age structure of the population, and the mortality and fertility differentials for various population groups, as well as the economic and social characteristics of the population and the labor force are question of scientific interest that are of importance both to pure research and for solving practical problems of industrial and commercial growth and management.

Some users of Population and Housing Census Results are: Government Non- governmental Organizations (NGOs) International Organizations Private organizations Researchers University students and Teachers/Professors Civil Society Just to name a few
