The methods and concepts used in the 1983 Census were almost identical those which were used in the 1973 Census The exception is the collection of the economic characteristics In the 1983 Census, in choosing the principal occupation of a respondent with dual occupations The time criterion was used instead of the income criterion used in the 1973 Census.

15 ‘Coverage (1983-Census)’ The 1983 Census covered:
All the 2190 wards of 288 towns, representing total urban area, were fully covered. Out of the total of village tracts, were completely covered, 112 were partially covered and 830 were uncovered for security reasons. Total enumerated population represents 96.6 percent of total population.

16 ‘Total Population’ Total population in 1983 – 35,307,913
Total male ,518,255 Total female 17,789,658 Percentage in Urban population 1983 – 24.0% Percentage in Urban population 1973 – 23.6%

17 The Post Enumeration Check (PEC)
PEC the first to be carried out in Myanmar It was conducted on a sample basis Exactly one year after the 1983 census To evaluate the completeness of the census coverage and the accuracy of the results PEC indicated, the 1983 census covered 99.6%of household, 99.1% of total population

the gap of the last population census and coming census is too long (about 30 years) having lack of technical and material assistances engaging with priority projects rather than population census all round assistances are being needed to develop population statistics
