Presentation transcript:

 Most of Canada’s population lives within 100 miles of the border with the United States.  About 75% of the population lives in major cities or towns.

 Most of Quebec and parts of eastern Canada are still heavily influenced by their French origins.  Much of the rest of the country is English origin.

 Canada has also had significant immigration from other European countries (besides England and France) such as: Germany, Italy and the Ukraine.  There are also many immigrants from Asia.  The Canadian Government tries very hard to maintain a multi-cultural environment, encouraging people to maintain their heritage.

 About ¼ of all Canadians live in Quebec.  Montreal is Quebec's largest city.  Quebec is the center of French Canadian culture.  More than 90% of Canadians that speak French live in Quebec.  Most people in Quebec are Roman Catholic; Catholic is the largest religion in Canada.

 Because of this, most legal papers are written only in French, road signs and signs on businesses are in French and French in spoken most frequently in public in Quebec.  There is a small minority that does not share the areas French culture.

 To the west, Ontario and other Canadian cities reflect British heritage much like Quebec symbolizes the French.  French is seldom heard or seen in the cities.  However, some cities (like Ottawa – Canada’s capital) is bilingual. English and French are commonly spoken.

 Many Inuit (once called Eskimos) and Canadian Indians live in the northern areas of Canada.
