From The Principal's Perspective ! Making the connection in order to serve the community school in a relevant and meaningful way.

The Building Blocks Understand the Mission and Vision of educators Recognize that each school has a School Improvement Plan Acknowledge that the Principal is the gatekeeper for the school and is limited by the Policies of the Board and Ministry of Education Focus on relationship development Commit to making a difference Evaluate your contribution

The Vision and Mission Vision: Students Achieving Their Full Potential Mission : Educating students to become lifelong learners and contributing citizens in a challenging, changing, multi-cultural world. The Values: Respect Innovation Accountability

School Improvement Plans Each school has a SIP which has as its foundation the vision, mission and values of the Board. (Curriculum, Environment, Parents) This plan is the key direction for the school to align with Ministry/Board directions and to meet the specific needs of the student community.

Effective Schools: A Community of Learners 1. Clear and focused mission Strong instructional leadership Safe and orderly environment Climate of high expectations Opportunity to learn and student time on task Frequent Monitoring of student progress Positive home and school relationships

How Do I Get Involved? Be familiar with your neighbourhood/community. Develop a relationship with the Principal in areas that are already in place – Key in on School Improvement Initiatives – curriculum support, social skills, physical activity. Be aware of the resources that are already in place and don’t duplicate. Be an observer. Identify areas of need that have relevance to the SIP, parents and students e.g. EQAO scores. Open up new opportunities to engage the school. Do something significant to develop the relationship.

Getting Involved cont’d Through humble, Christ-like service cut through the common perception of a hidden agenda. Build trust through a willingness to be trained. Support school initiatives ( Book Room, Tutoring, Fundraising, Nutrition programs, Library support, Special Needs, Literacy and Numeracy directions, Trip supervision, Classroom support, School Council, sports, the arts, science and technology……) Be a strong advocate for public education and the community school. Recognize that your efforts will be scrutinized – applauded or criticized.

The Attitude of Christ Desire to Serve Develop Relationships Determine the Commitment Decide Next Steps Direct Involvement

The Need is Great! Vision Commitment Action
