River Cleaning Campaign Government of Nepal Office of Prime Minister and Ministers Council

 Bagmati River, originates from Bagdwar, gradually gets contaminated as it passes through 28 km long Kathmandu valley, where almost 4m population of the Nepal’s capital reside. Bagmati River  Bagmati and its nine tributaries become filthy salvage due to direct discharge of solid and liquid disposal

 Several cleaning campaigns were initiated at governmental and non- governmental levels in the past but failed to get momentum.  Current phase of cleaning campaign started on May 19,  Campaign was a collaborative effort of governmental and non governmental organizations.

 Chief Secretary(Cabinet Secretary) played as a coordinator among different stakeholders, facilitator and enabler to the law enforcement agencies.  Security agencies, students, philanthropic organizations, civil servants, business organizations, ordinary people, civil society organizations including media took part in the cleaning campaign.

 Campaigners assemble at the river bank of designated place where the garbage is dumped, take an oath, chant slogans and engage in cleaning activities for two hours, reassemble, dance and disburse after chanting a slogan depicting message that campaign is continued. President at Bagmati

 Dumping garbage in the river has been substantially controlled,  3000 MT of garbage(80%) from Bagmati and altogether 5000 MT from 9 tributaries has been collected,  Water started to flow, earlier the rivers were dead as there was no motion during winter,  BOC/COD level is increased,  Funds collected from penalties in the last 6 months has been increased by many folds than in the past, During 100 weeks of cleaning campaign:

Continued 100 weeks…  56 Km. sewerage line/system is under construction- progressing fast, as the campaigner have been putting pressure to the authorities

 Sewerage lines are being laid down or are proposed to lay down in all the river systems in the Kathmandu Valley,  Cleaning campaign are now started in 14 different places at a time on every Saturday,  Around 50 locations outside Kathmandu have initiated similar cleaning campaigns taking inspiration from Bagmati. Continued 100 weeks…

Social leaders and activists like Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi also took part in the campaign.

 About 60 Kilometer long Human chain was made with the participation of Vice President, Prime Minister, Chairperson of the constituent Assembly, chief Justice, ex-PMs, Party chairperson, Ministers, MPs, students, professionals, business communities and many more, 100 th Episode on 11 th April, 2015  Number was counted as above 1,10,000  Unprecedented solidarity from all section of the society.

Achievements:  5 Local committees has given authority to maintain the cleanliness of designated length of river,  Two dozen gardens along the river Banks are made or are being made.

 Resettlement or evacuation of three big squatters along Bagmati river and altogether more than a dozen settlements along the banks of its tributaries, Challenges:  Clearance of land encroachment along the river banks that the government offices have registered the land in the name of individuals and big buildings are erected,  Putting latest technology for the treatment of sewerage and finding appropriate funding modalities.

 Continue campaign with more participation of local community,  Enforcement of law,  Augmentation of water flow in the river and to revitalize the river ecosystem. Way Forward
