Section 4.2 Eating Disorders Slide 1 of 15 NASA was considering sending canaries into space to study them under zero gravity. The project was scrapped when someone realized that in spite of having sufficient water supplies, they could die of dehydration within a few hours. Why? Birds unlike humans need gravity to swallow. Humans can swallow even while hanging upside down.

Bulimia Most people with bulimia may suffer from dehydration, kidney damage, and a lack of necessary vitamins and minerals. Health Risks Bulimia may begin in connection with a diet, but the person soon becomes unable to stop the cycle of binging and purging. Possible Causes People who have bulimia are aware of what they are doing, but they are unable to control their behavior. Treatment

Binge Eating Disorder They usually do not purge after a binge. Health Risks The main physical risks of binge eating disorder are excess weight gain and unhealthy dieting. Possible Causes Some people use binge eating to avoid dealing with difficult emotions, such as anger, or with stressful situations. Treatment People with binge eating disorder need help in learning how to control their eating. They often need to address underlying emotional problems.
