4 What you will learn today! Discuss why some people develop eating disorders. Describe the health risks associated with anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, Identify where teen with an eating disorder can get help. Analyze factors that impact nutritional choices of adolescents.

7 Defined Eating disorder – Extreme and damaging eating behaviors that can lead to sickness or death Anorexia nervosa – Eating disorder characterized by self starvation leading to extreme weight loss. Malnutrition – Condition in which the body doesn’t get the nutrients it needs to grow and function properly. Bulimia – Condition in which a person eats a large amount of food and then vomits it up. Binge eating disorder – Compulsive over eating.

9 Binge Eating People with a binge eating problem eat unusually large amounts of food on a regular basis. They often eat quickly, do other things while they eat (like watch TV or do homework), and don't stop when they're full. That's why binge eating is also called compulsive overeating mixed-up way of dealing with or avoiding difficult emotions. All eating disorders can lead to serious health consequences, and all involve emotional distress.

12 Helping someone with a Eating Disorder! Read section 9.16 page 285 and copy down information on the five steps on helping someone with an eating disorder. Nutrition specialists or dietitians. Psychologists and other therapists can help teens and families learn healthy ways of coping with emotions, thoughts, stress, and other things that might contribute to someone's eating problem. (Teen health page 4)
