4 Section 2- Eating Disorders Objectives: Identify health risks associated with anorexia. Explain the relationship between bulimia and dieting List the main health risks of binge eating disorder.

5 Section 2- Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa An eating disorder is a mental disorder that reveals itself through abnormal behaviors related to food. Eating disorders are about more than just food. They are about emotions, thoughts, and attitudes. Someone with Anorexia Nervosa doesn’t eat enough food to maintain a healthy body weight.

10 Section 2- Eating Disorders Bulimia - People who have bulimia go on uncontrolled eating binges followed by purging, or removing, the food from their bodies. - -vomiting or use of laxatives

11 Section 2- Eating Disorders Health Risks: Individuals with bulimia can maintain weight within their normal range, but the cycle of bingeing and purging has a negative effect on the body. Dehydration Kidney damage Distress on throat and teeth due to stomach acid

12 Section 2- Eating Disorders Possible Causes? Treatment? Activity: Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast bulimia and anorexia nervosa (causes, treatments, symptoms, etc.) Work with the person next to you. We will be combining all your efforts to create one master diagram for the class.

13 Section 2- Eating Disorders Binge Eating Disorder -Compulsive over eating -cannot stop eating, even when they are full. Health Risks: -weight gain -unhealthy diet -greater risk for illness such as diabetes -greater risk for physical disorder like high blood pressure
