3 Eating Disorders Eating Disorder – a mental disorder that reveals itself through abnormal behaviors related to food Anorexia Bulimia Binge eating

4 Know these terms: Binge: A binge is a behavior engaged in excessively over a short period of time. It may refer to: Binge drinking · Binge eating · Binge-watching · Binge flying Purge: As many as 70 to 80 percent of bulimics purge by means of self-induced vomiting while 30 percent use laxatives or Diuretics.

5 SELF-REFLECTION Early intervention is very important Eating disorders have similarities with drug addicts and alcoholics  Others may enable  Usually don’t admit/realize they need help  If treated often risk of relapse  Individual is very sneaky/manipulative

6 It isn’t really about food… Food issues are the symptoms…. There is an underlying issue….. It is most times about control…..

7 Eating Disorders Anorexia Nervosa – doesn’t eat enough food to maintain a healthy body weight (starve themselves) CCauses of Anorexia: LLack of a chemical that regulates mood LLow self-esteem TTroubled relationships TTrying to control their life, but it in turn controls them MMY FRIEND ANA

8 Eating Disorders Bulimia – go on uncontrolled eating binges followed by purging, or removing the food from their bodies (vomiting)  Causes:  Same as anorexia  May use food as a way to feel emotionally better

9 Eating Disorders Binge Eating Disorder – regularly have an uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food (cannot stop eating when full)  Causes:  Use this to avoid dealing with problems or difficult emotions

10 Definitions of true eating disorders Fear of gaining weight Refusal to maintain weight in normal range Disturbance of body image Absence of menstrual periods Binge eating-perceived lack of control Recurrent behaviors to prevent weight gain with eating MISS AMERICA - EATING DISORDER  Internal Feelings - Explored! 11 STATS 18% of females in the US suffer from an eating disorder 50% of anorexics are also bulimic 62% of females in “appearance” sports report an eating disorder Anorexia is fatal for 10-15% of patients and of these 2-5% commit suicide

12 Normal Eating Habits Eating foods you want without guilt Normal portions (most of the time) Some carbohydrates, protein, and fat Eating in response to hunger and learning to stop when satisfied Three meals + snacks Being able to eat with family and friends

13 Abnormal eating Habits… Centered on thinness, body shape, or comfort from stress Irregular, chaotic eating Consistent over-or under-eating Affects 50-80% of women & girls over age 11, increasing in men Abnormal eating becomes the norm Thoughts of eating/food/weight become overwhelmingly strong and all-consuming Eating disorder behavior distance them from their body’s natural signals of fullness & hunger
