R is for Rail Roads The first rail road was built in 1883 so that the Iowans could ship goods. Iowans started losing money from building rail roads. So the government gave the Iowans 4 million acres to save money.

S is for Iowa state motto The state motto of Iowa was incorporated to Iowa's seal. It was the work of a three man senate.

T is for The Great Depression It was the longest and deepest depression in the 20 th century. Everyone struggled in Iowa to eat.

U is for Union Pacific Railroad In 1865 construction on the railroad had begun from Omaha Westward Union pacific joined the central pacific, the joining of the railroads was marked in ceremony by the driving of a golden spike.

V is for Veterans home of Iowa It opened its doors to Iowa veterans in 1887 as the old solder home. It is one of the largest of the 148 th state owned faculties for veterans in the nation.
