4 Sugar Beets The sugar beet was first recognized as a plant with valuable sweetening properties in the early 1700s. Sugar beet growing for sucrose production became a viable industry in the United States by about 1870. Sugar beets grow well in northeastern Colorado, because of the availability of irrigation water, and the richness of the soil

5 What are sugar beets used for? Sucrose from sugar beets represents the principal use for sugar beets Sugar beets contain from 13 to 22% sucrose. Sucrose is widely used as a food additive Sugar beet pulp and molasses are processing by-products and are widely used as feed supplements for livestock Beet tops are an excellent source of protein, vitamin A, and carbohydrates, Tops are equal to alfalfa haylage or corn silage for sheep.

6 Great Western Sugar Co. Founded by Charles Boettcher and his partners Pioneer bringing the sugar beat to Colorado The first sugar mill was built in Loveland CO 1901

7 The workers Original sugar beet workers, settled northwest of Longmont, Colorado Were immigrants from Sweden. Were the main workers German-Russian workers were also among those who early on farmed the sugar beet fields in Colorado. Sugar Beet workers also came from Mexico

8 Other Industries Mining continued to be Colorado’s number one industry Ranching and Farming were the second largest industry Tourism began to grow as getting to the state and up into the mountains became easier

9 Transportation Horse and Wagon  Automobile Model T  Everyone could own one Building of Roads Better trains/railways Tunnels Issues with the Automobile Colorado is a large state Rugged topography Dirt Weather

10 Roads?? Where to build the roads ? How to build that much road? Marinating the roads? Need for a highway to connect the cities Who would construct it? Use convicts as labor A road from Pueblo to Leadville was created The Skyline drive at Canon City was created A road to the top of the Royal Gorge was opened

11 Race to the clouds! Daring drivers wanted to see what their new cars could do The hoped to drive up the famous Pikes Peak The original drivee took 9 hours! Today driver race one another up pikes peak in the Race to the clouds The course climbs through 156 tight cures

12 Rail Roads 1870=157 miles of railway line 1890= 4,176 miles of railway line 1914=5,739 miles of line this is the peak of the railroad in Colorado

13 Moffat Tunnel Objective was to get to cut time between the eastern plains and the western slope Denver, Salt Lake and Pacific Railroad greatest issue was eliminated Snow and high grades Only eliminated 23 miles of track

14 Women Governor Routt was one man who wanted women to win the war Women fought long and hard to win suffrage Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and Utah Health Care House hold inventions gave women more free time Joined clubs and wanted to help solve issues in the cities and towns Churches and women’s group started hospitals to care for people

15 Troubled Teens A Special Court First state in the union to change the rules for teenagers who broke the law Judge Ben Lindsey started a special court for teens Teens were no longer tried as adults but as juveniles Teens went to reform schools They learned skills for jobs Taught the kids how to take care of themselves This new idea gave a second chance to a large number of kids

16 Work Place Workers are treated poorly 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week Less than$3 a day Women and Children worked too Worked with Heavy machinery Bad lighting Heat No fresh air Miners begin to come together and start striking
