Antiproton Decelerator (AD) Consolidation ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP1

AD consolidation Most of AD dates from ~1985 => Main components are 30 years old…. Due to other important CERN programs, only urgent issues were addressed for the first ~10 years of AD operation For many years AD was always below the budget cut-off line since it’s not part of the LHC program A small consolidation program (~2.3 MCHF), separated from the LHC program, started in 2009 in view of running AD until 2016 or so After approval of the ELENA project, the scope of the consolidation increased and is aimed at continued operation of AD for at least years after ELENA physics has started which means Concerned items are: Target area, magnets, power converters, vacuum system, beam cooling, instrumentation, RF, control system, Infrastructure etc. AD is at the moment in the middle of a major consolidation program with a budget plan of 23.8 MCHF allocated for the period 2014 – 2020 ADUC 13/1/2015T. Target Area ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP3

Target Area consolidation Target/horn control system (movements, interlocks etc.) – Replace old hardware built as prototype and running since initial AD operation: – New radiation hard-cameras in the target area for surveillance. New machine interlocks acquisition system. New software for AD operators supervision and expert interface for equipment operation. Additional safety added: Status of horn supply, zone access, strip line temperature, mobile shielding status etc. Separation of machine and access interlocks. Service vehicle (elephant): complete overhaul of electrics/hydraulics after breakdown in 2012 Tunnel areas: – Water infiltration at entrance repaired with resin injection – New airtight door at target zone entrance – New resin floor throughout tunnel – Improve infiltration situation in TT6 Surface buildings: – B232: Removal of legacy radioactive waste, Re-creation of a buffer zone adapted for large radioactive object from target area, Water tightness – B195: Retention vessel for the AD-target cooling station, Sealing penetration to target area ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP5

Target Area consolidation Consolidation of beam instrumentation: Additional BCT + BPM & 2017 Production of antiproton target designs & spares: Only 1 spare target available. From 2015 Magnetic horn spares and new stripline/junction box. From 2015  Critical for operation – only very radioactive spare horn available. Consolidation of target and horn chariots: Very old equipment, monitoring being lost year by year. From 2015 Review of target area magnets: Upstream quads critical for operation! From 2015 Consolidation of transport methods: Moving heavy and radioactive equipment Consolidation of radiation protection detectors: Air monitoring + PMI/IG Ventilation and cooling system replacement – RP issues: Access and ventilation system not integrated, no monitoring of air flushing of zone, manual setting of beam/access conditions. To be completed in LS2. Target area decontamination 2019 Refurbishment of surface buildings and tunnel Consolidation of electrical infrastructure 2018/19 ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP6

Magnets, ring and transfer lines Main bendings (24): – Renovation and re-shimming: DR.BHN06 dismantled and renovated due to excessive coil movement. Regular coil movement measurements on remaining units will determine which one(s) next. – 1 or 2 units will be renovated this shutdown. BHN23/BHN24 ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP7

Magnets, ring and transfer lines Ring Quadrupoles: no specific plan, re-shimming done a few years ago H/V correctors near e-cooler replaced during LS1. Ejection line quadrupoles (2) replaced during LS1. Spare inventory almost complete. Target area magnets: Quadrupoles upstream of target (9050 & 9052). Area is very hot,1 spare exists but lack of knowledge about state, manipulation & connections. Alternative designs are being considered including permanent magnets – 2017 Remaining Bendings and quads: renovation of spare units Ejection line magnets (except DEM-line) will be replaced by e-static units for ELENA ~2016 ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP8

Power converters Most urgent items consolidation finished during LS1. General consolidation program for 2015 – 2020 approved; renewal & standardisation Replacement of orbit corrector units with standard Cancun supplies in /4 kV pulsed injection line converters to be replaced by new Megadiscap in 2016 – units are already in operation with good results. Replacement of thyristor converters by commercial units during LS2. ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP9

Vacuum system General consolidation of complete vacuum system – 2018 – Completed: Control system renewal, Cryo system, Sublimation pump filament renewal, 6000-line primary pumps, Turbo-pump groups, Previdage valves, Penning/Pirani gauges. – Ongoing: Bakeout equipment renewal, Ion pump feedthrough heaters, Ion pumps (1 sector/year). – To be started in 2015: Spare vacuum chambers, Standardisation of straight sections, Ion gauges renewal, Fast valve electronics renewal, Spare Cryo compressors, Gas injection system. – >2015: RGA PVSS integration, ELENA integration In total ~ 25% of complete program is done. ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP10

Stochastic cooling Controls, electronics, delay/attenuator platform installation, individual u-wave amplifier power supplies and p/u&kicker movement motors/electronics all renovated or replaced during LS1. Notch filters: Replacement of large cable-box with optical filter system. Increased stability and simplicity & less space requirements. Planned for – 1.6 GHz power amplifiers (48): Obsolete semi-conductors, increased failure rate. Prototyping for new design if old amplifiers become unrepairable or too unreliable. 2015/16. Vacuum tanks: Life expectancy and mechanical integrity of pickup and kicker vacuum tanks & s-cooling equipment inside. Possible consolidation not yet adressed. ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP11

Electron cooling consolidation ADUC 13/1/2015T. Eriksson CERN BE/OP12 Ongoing/LS1: –HV power supply renewal (TE/EPC) Renewal of electron cooler: –Build a new state-of-the-art cooler –2015 – Aim for installation in LS2. –Existing cooler: Is >30 years old We have no spare magnets; very long down time if failure, significant cost for new spares Performance issues e- bpm:s not operational Momentum pbar300 MeV/c100 MeV/c Electron energy35 keV2.8 keV Electron current2.5 A100 mA Cooling length1.5 m Drift magnet field590 Gauss Electron beam radius25 mm Cooling time16 s15 s ε x / ε y 3 / 3 (π × mm × mrad) 0.8 / 0.5 (π × mm × mrad) dp/p10 -4 < 7 × 10 -5
