Two- Tab Book- Ural Mountains  The country of Russia stretches across Eurasia  Russia is the world’s largest country in area.  The Ural mountains divide the Russian region-  Highest population density in European Russia  Majority of cities in European Russia  Asian Russia also known as Siberia

Layered – Look Book Landforms- Mountains and Plateaus  The highest point in Russia is in the Caucus Mountain region and the Black Sea around Georgia.  Russia’s Ural Mountains are more rolling and divide Europe Russia from Asia Russia

Plains Much of Ukraine and Belarus are in a broad plain

Coasts, Seas, and Lakes  Caspian Sea in Southwest Russia  Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest lake- it holds about one fifth of the world’s fresh water! 5,387 ft. deep!

Rivers The Dnieper, Don, and Volga are three of the largest southern flowing rivers in the region. Rivers such as the Ob, Yenisy, and Lena flow north to the Arctic Ocean.

Natural Resources  Forest, energy and mineral resources are among the world’s richest.  Caspian Sea region -Coal, natural gas and oil  The area is also rich in metals such as copper, gold, and iron.  Lukoil Oil (Russian oil company) has over 10 trillion barrels of oil in reserves.

Climate  Mid-Latitude- Much of the region is in the Humid Continental- Western Russia, - major cities- major producer of grain  Mid-Latitude- Steppe or Semi-Arid- located mainly in southwest Russia near the “stan” region  High-Latitude- Much of eastern Russia or Siberia has extremely cold weather- Subarctic- sparse population due to extreme cold – Taiga vegetation

Culture- Settlement  Most Russian people live in the European section of Russia (west of Urals)  2/3 of population lives in the cities (9 million people in Moscow), Kiev, St. Petersburg, Minsk).
