After his return to civilian life in 1960, he recorded his first stereo record, Stuck On You (#1) Elvis was greatly affected by his mother’s death. After she died he pulled family, friends and associates closer to him –He became increasingly isolated from the outside & when he did travel he took as many of his “Memphis Mafia” as he could released 2 more films: G.I. Blues & Flaming Star –Both are hits strictly based on his starring role March 25, 1961 – after playing a benefit for the USS Arizona, Elvis leaves the stage until : had 5 #1 (It’s Now or Never, Stuck On You, Are You Lonesome (1960); Surrender (1961); Good Luck Charm (1963) & 8 more Top 10 (Can’t Help Falling In Love #2, 1961; Return to Sender #2, 1962 & Devil in Disguise #3, 1963) : Elvis began to focus on B-movies and their soundtracks –Most were very bad, but he was making $1 million per/plus royalties

The Top 10 became increasingly harder to reach –Crying In the Chapel (#3, 1965) 5/1/1967 – married Priscilla Beaulieu, his girlfriend of 6 years –2/1/1968 – their only child, Lisa Marie, was born 12/3/1968 – fearing that the public was forgetting him, he staged his Comeback Special 7/26/69 – debuts at the International Hotel in Las Vegas –His fee for 4 weeks was over $1 million –Riding the success of his comeback, he released several hits –In the Ghetto (#3, 1969), Suspicious Minds (#1, 1969) (1 st #1 since 1962)

His last Top 10 hit was Burning Love (#2, Oct ‘72) Priscilla left Graceland in Feb & Elvis filed for divorce January 1973 Though he never drank alcohol & was publicly against the use of recreational drugs, it is believed that Elvis was addicted to prescription drugs Maintained a very hectic tour schedule –When he died in 1977, he had played over 1,100 concerts 1973 – Parker negotiated a deal to sell back his masters for a lump-sum in which Elvis only got $2.8 million –He no longer received royalties on songs before 1973 Drug abuse affected his health; he had grown quite obese Last live performance was 6/25/77 8/16/77 – found dead in his bathroom; official cause – heart failure Elvis was one of the founding members of the RR HoF in 1986

By 1965, Cash had left his family and moved to Greenwich Village –Late 1965 – Cash arrested for smuggling amphetamines across the Mexican border –After a near serious auto wreck & near-fatal overdose, his wife Vivian divorced him Cash moves to Nashville and lives w/ Waylon Jennings Cash began a relationship w/ June Carter, who helped him kick his drug habit & find religion –Worked together as well Jackson (#2 C&W, 1967) Cash also worked w/ many rock acts of the time –Most famous, his cover of Bob Dylan’s It Ain’t Me, Babe (#58, #4 C&W 1964)

1968 – At Folsom Prison (#13) went 2x platinum 1969 – had another Top 5 pop hit, A Boy Named Sue (#2) : hosted The Johnny Cash Show 1970s – became active in charity work & Native American rights –Still had several C&W hits –One Piece At A Time (#1 C&W, 1976) 1985 – formed The Highwaymen w/ Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson 1986 – claims to have been purged from Nashville by the country music industry –Turned to acting, had heart surgery & entered treatment for addiction to pain killers 1993 – returns to music w/ guest lead vocals on U2’s The Wanderer –began recording w/ American Recordings –Paired w/ producer Rick Rubin (know for his rap & rock work) went on to release some of the most critically acclaimed work of his career
