+ About the Magnet Program Started in 2000 to meet the needs of gifted and high achieving students who have an interest in math, science, and technology Rigorous academic work allows students to develop study skills/study habits that prepare them for high school advanced placement (AP) courses and college Learning extends beyond the classroom through field trips, science camp, regional and national competition

+ About the Magnet Program Science and mathematics courses use an inquiry approach to teaching and learning. Teaches students to become apprentice investigators, learning not only math and science facts, but also the processes of scientific research, discovery, and documentation. The Magnet teachers are committed and enthusiastic professionals who have high expectations for themselves and their students. They are experts in their subject areas, trained in GATE instruction, and hold graduate degrees in education.

+ Magnet Program Goals Magnet students will have an understanding and appreciation for the processes of scientific discovery become critical thinkers who approach problems in creative ways become proficient at technical reading and writing serve as peer role models obtain the knowledge and study skills necessary to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school

+ Magnet Program Expectations Strive for excellence in all academic work Maintain a 3.00 Academic GPA (Math, Science, Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies) Note: Field trips, science camp, and other Magnet privileges depend on maintaining a 3.00 Academic GPA.

+ Magnet Program Expectations Show respect and courtesy to all students, teachers, administrators, and staff members Be responsible for taking good care of all equipment, materials and supplies Observe the Homework Policy, completing all assignments neatly, accurately and on time, and making up any work missed during absences

+ Application Process Obtain application from 5 th grade teacher, CT office, CT website, or TUSD website Complete application and submit January 21 – 29 Take diagnostic test – January 25 from 4-5pm OR January 26 from 5-6pm.

+ Application Process Supporting documents must be submitted by the application deadline in order for application to be considered Report card CAASPP scores Transfer Permit from district of residence (ONLY if student lives outside of TUSD.) If student is new to TUSD, please submit a copy of the student’s attendance record and discipline report from current school with their application.
