Rail Ranch Elementary School Meet and Greet Tammy Hunter-Wethers Principal

Introduction  Experience  Philosophy  Commitment

Program Improvement Status  2010-2011 Academic Performance Index (API) went from 832 in 2009 to 839 in 2010. A gain of 7 points.  2011-2012 Academic Performance Index (API) went from 839 in 2010 to 843 in 2011. A gain of 4 points  Rail Ranch’s API scores of 843 exceeds the state’s exemplary goal of 800.

Why are we in Program Improvement?  2010 –One subgroup did not meet the percent proficient rate. The target for 2010 was 58% for math. The target group had 57.1%, 44 students scored prof. or adv.  This means the Rail Ranch missed meeting that goal by 2 students. (46/77 =58.9%)

Program Improvement continued  2011- Two subgroups did not meet the percent proficient rate. The target for LA was 67.6% and mathematics was 68.5%. The target group in LA scored 50.0% (81/162) and in Math 57.4% (93/162). Since this was the first year of not meeting AYP, this did not place us in Program Improvement.

What did…..  The one subgroup in 2010 did not make the percent proficient for the second year in the same content area (math).  The target was 68.5%. The subgroup scored 56.2%. (45/80)  In order to have made Safe Harbor we would have needed 1 more student in the subgroup to reduce the number not hitting the target by 10%. (68.5-56.2=12.2)

What are we doing now?  Strategies, policies, and practices that utilize scientifically – based research and have the greatest likelihood of ensuring that all groups of students will meet the state’s achievement standards.  We are working on the Academic Program Survey.  We will begin the Before School Tutoring Program in January.  Staff contribute to the whole child with programs like Green Team, Homework clubs, study hall for students, art programs, math challenge winners, highest number of Reflections entries. Teachers donate their own money to kids who need helmets, clothing, and books. Rail is our family and we take care of our children.  Students are being monitored by Scholastic Math Inventories (SMI) and Scholastic Reading Inventories (SRI). (Scores serve a predictor of achievement on California Standards Test (CST).

Continued  High quality professional development for school staff that will lead to removing the school from PI status.  Staff are participating in Professional Learning Communities, District Math Trainings, TOSA individual and group trainings.

How can our parents help?  Ensure our children arrive on time for school.  Make every effort to ensure students attend school regularly and to schedule appointments after school hours.  Support your child with keeping them responsible for completing homework.  Support our parent volunteer opportunities.

Final Comment  Our staff is committed to Rail Ranch. Many teachers and staff members have had their own children attend Rail and are currently GATE students and in AP classes. Our science and math scores were some of the highest in the district over the years.  We are advocates for your children and want the best for them.
