Maths Parent Workshop (Session 3)

Aims of the Workshops To raise standards in maths by working closely with parents. To provide parents with a clear outline of the key features of maths teaching at Grafton Primary School. To provide parents with materials that they can use at home to support children’s maths development.

Multiplication Tables The key to working out multiplication calculations efficiently and accurately, is being secure with multiplication tables. Below are the expectations for each year group.  Year 1 - Count in multiples of 2,5 and 10. Recall and use doubles of all numbers to 10 and corresponding halves.  Year 2 - Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers.  Year 3 - Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.  Year 4 - Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12.  Year 5 - Revision of all times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12.  Year 6 - Revision of all times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12

Multiplication  Practical multiplication, using groups of objects. E.g. 2 lots of 4  Using ‘arrays’ e.g. 4 x 5 =  Partitioning e.g. 15 x 4 = (10 x 4) + (5 x 4) = 70  The column method when multiplying by one digit.  The grid method when multiplying by more than one digit.
