1 Parent Maths Workshop Tuesday 6th December 2016

2 Aims of the workshop To outline the main changes to the new primary maths curriculum. To provide parents with ideas and activities that they can use at home to support children’s development. To outline the clear progression of the four calculation methods and how these are taught at TSM.

3 Key areas of the maths curriculum
Fluent recall of the mental maths facts e.g. times tables, number bonds etc. To reason mathematically- children need to be able to explain the mathematical concepts. They must explain how they got the answer and why they are correct. Problem solving- applying their skills to real- life contexts.

4 New expectations Simple fractions (1/4 and ½) are taught from Year 1 and by the end of Year 6 children should be able to convert decimals to simple fractions (e.g =3/8) By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know times tables up to 12x12. End of KS2 mental maths test has been replaced with an arithmetic test.

5 On your tables…. There are a sample of some of the test questions that your child will need to do by the end of Year 6. Have a go and don’t forget to show your working out!!!

7 Addition Year 5: add whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition) Year 6: solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why

8 Addition Mental methods are still important when adding numbers that have links to number bonds = 7+3= 10 30+20=50 = 200

9 Column method This method is efficient when adding larger numbers and decimals. 379+92= 3 7 9

12 Subtraction Year 5: Year 6:

13 Column subtraction In year 3 and 4 they would use expanded method:

14 Column subtraction In Year 5 and 6 children need to use decomposition (column method squashed!!!) 76-39= 237-84=

15 Subtracting decimals Same method but they need to understand the value of the digits!!! 6.3 – 3.24=

16 Multiplication Year 5: multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for two- digit numbers Year 6: multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication

17 Multiplying by 10,100 and 1000 Children need to be able to understand the place value of each digit. When multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 they need to move the digits along the columns, increasing their value. They are not adding a zero!!!!!!

18 Year 5- Grid Method The starting point of a formal written method is partitioning the numbers and multiplying them. We can then begin to use a more formal written method to support this. 24 x 5= 20 x 5= 4 x 5= x 20 4 5

20 Multiplying up to 4 digits with 2 digits.

The ability to estimate To use maths in a real life context (Rather than just 7x7=49 they need to know there are 7 Christmas trees and each tree has 7 presents. How many presents are there in total? Cooking Shopping Support their children with these 4 operations
