MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December   MICE selected NEWS: Future meetings Safety review Study of controls Gateway I & Toward Gateway II Rebaselining

MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December Since collaboration meeting Executive Board discussions and decisions (2 and 20 nov 2003) (Highlights:) -- future collaboration meetings -- rebaselining -- initiate study of controls -- keep hunting for funding and new collaborators

MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December Future Meetings: 1. MICE Collaboration Meeting (March 29-April 1, CERN) Organisers: local: AB+Rikard Sandstrom program: Dan Kaplan 2. Video conferences We discussed the issues of lack of participation etc… Felt that a long term planning was needed (also as part of rebaselining) Ken Long has agreed to organize the agendas of Video Conferences Planning is now in place. Send him suggestions! 3. Meetings of Executive board are on Thursday following video conferences 4. Technical board meetings every two weeks (felt necessary given the huge job that rebaselining represents)

MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December Safety review Excellent work by AFCSWG (G. Barr, E. Baynham, E. Black, T. Bradshaw, M. A. Cummings, M. A. Green, S. Ishimoto, Y. Ivanyushenkov, W. Lau, M. Zisman) Review in Berkeley 9-10 December D. Allspach, G. Benincasa, M. Seely,L. Starritt, J. Weisend, J. Wells "We believe that the MICE collaboration is ready to proceed to detailed engineering design and eventual review by the RAL External Safety Committee". ( + A few suggestions for further investigations.) The AFCSWG report and the reviewer's report are on the web. => A good example on how to operate a working group in MICE.

MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December MICE controls: We need to understand which ancillary measurements/controls will be necessary to -- be sure we take good data -- be sure we have the necessary ingredients to compare data and theory with a high precision (10 -3 ) ref: proposal and answers to referrees safety controls will be independent we may find some redendancy but will advise at a later stage There will be a dedicated session at the March Coll. Meeting to discuss these issues and organize future work Call for interested people was issued. Response from four institutes so far. I will need a volunteer to draft a first proposal to trigger discussion.

MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December Gateway I 12 December 2003 This was to establish the business case for MICE Comments from Ken Peach: On the question of whether MICE passed, the answer is that (apart from the finances) I think it passed – we still have to produce the WBS and a few other documents, but I think that went well. On the finances, I think we did not do quite as well as I had hoped, although the review team were well aware that, without some sort of signal from the UK, it will be difficult to get others to commit. The difficulty is the shortage of UK funding. I did explain (as was strongly supported by Andy Parker) that we in particle physics are very well used to working in this way, and producing a project within the available resources. What I think that will conclude is that we will have gone through the Gateway 1 at "amber" (but very close to "red"), and that the Gateway 2 review will have to be more detailed - several days

MICE – Video conference Alain Blondel, 17 December REBASELINING (See Paul's talk later) It would be desirable to have a new technical baseline by the next collaboration meeting including engineering and ***cost*** estimates and revised tasks and schedule. Detector solenoid ends need to be studied in more detail following an approach similar to what was done for absorber/focus coil integration. Gateway 2 is around summer of 2004, we should have a stable new baseline by then. (***cost***) - many changes have taken place in the design of the experiment, AFCSWG/RF cavities and PowerSources/detectors/Beam line etc… Need update and change control. (reference is still the MICE proposal) -- submit change request forms to technical board who will advise on action -- reports and documents for the collaboration meeeting in March 2004 at CERN -- interim reports at the VC until then
