MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 1 Welcome to the 10th MICE collaboration meeting. 1.Global neutrino factory situation 2.Possible intermediate steps towards full MICE 3.Aims of this meeting 4.Assignments

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 2 Nufact04 That is us (AB slides in SPSC Villars meeting)

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 3

4 The executive board submitted the following to the collaboration board

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 5  - STEP I: spring 2006 STEP II: summer 2006 STEP III: winter 2007 STEP IV: spring 2007 STEP V: fall 2007 STEP VI: 2008

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 6  Critical path items at the start are clearly a) the beam and b) the spectrometer solenoid (2->2.5 years after order)  Funding to get the spectrometer solenoids is difficult and causes delay. (~2 M€ a pair of rather standard technology) WE ARE STUCK!  the MICE management proposes to deal with this potential stumbling block, while remaining committed to ultimately achieving the full goals of MICE (“Step VI” above) by proceeding with additional intermediate steps  boundary condition: additional intermediate steps use mainly items that are part of the final MICE configuration.  The soonest we *may* be able to get the first spectrometer is from US funding  This leads to the consideration of step II.V (2.5)

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 7  - STEP I STEP II STEP II.V Insert absorber (solid) between the two halves and measure Pt & E distribution and emittance growth  Publishable result! STEP II.VI Split tracker in two parts and measure against each other (systematics) Establish beam match andwether we have all knobsnecessary to drawEmittance vs transmissioncurve. Measure emittance These are mostly questions for beam design and matching to and within solenoid.

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 8  the MICE collaboration is confident that it has enough resources to go ahead with practical measurements and achieve a first worthwhile goal.  justify our request to proceed with the implementation of the muon beam line. U.S. decision on Step 2.5 funding might be possible in about six months. Meanwhile we are actively pursuing the following alleys that should get us further 1. letter of intent submitted to Italian funding agency to proceed towards a full proposal to INFN; (under review now) (spectrometer solenoids!) 2. Investigations on use of MRI magnets that could be borrowed or leased from company to be used temporarily as spectrometer Magnets 3. We are exploring a request to the EU funding programmes for MICE under the heading “NEST” (New and Emerging Science and Technology). If any of this materializes soon enough US funding could be redirected towards RFCC Module, maybe in a reduced version (MICE step V.0 ?) well along full MICE, since AFCC module funding (UK &Japan) is earmarked (though not released)

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 9  - STEP I STEP II STEP III STEP IV STEP V This may be too expensive…Although we do have good prospectto secure 8 MW of RF power.

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 10 STEP V STEP V.0 Should get 5-10 MV RF acceleration (limited by dark current) Shorter, less expensive, no coupling coil, (very limited optics flexibility) does this work in flip, RFoFo, non flip modes? These are mostly optics questions

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 11 Upcoming UK gateway steps -- the foreseen cost and schedule review is foreseen on November 12th Essential ingredient for this : our beautiful Technical Design Report http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/accelerator/mice/tr/mice_tech_ref.html -- gateway 2/3 revue will take place late december (?) and will be focused on Beam Line and MICE design and development The discussion of step 2.5 above is quite relevant for this! Congratulations Paul!

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 12 Aims for this meeting Decisions: According to follow up of Osaka CM, we need to achieve this time: 1 cryocooler decision remaining issue was Liq. He use for absorbers should be possible at least occasionally (not routine operation) 2 tracker validation remaining issues were mostly on performance (P L resolution?)  rms resolution should be <10% of rms of distribution at eq. emittance. without and with RF background. MICE note has been drafted and given to referrees (Gregoire + Summers) 3 decision on magnetic shielding for detectors upstream and downstream Also: 4 agree on policy towards step 2.5 & request for spectrometer solenoids (CB) There are difficulties in funding but there are good hopes that situation will unlock progressively. We dont want to be caught sleeping! Lets go ahead.

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 13 Watch Progress (and enjoy if possible) 5 end to end simulation of MICE with G4MICE (RF background) 6. controls and monitoring of physics parameters (are we going anywhere here?) 7. finish matching all steps of MICE (essentially done, Bravo Ulisse) There remain many studies to be made to assess precision of predictions taking into account imperfections etc….  a lot of work for the optics group! (Welcome back Cristina) + construction of first RF cavity shipping of RF components to RAL MUCOOL test area first results from TPG Tracker analysis Beam design and simulations, and more.

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 14 Assignments: Define path ahead and understand how to get there Example AFC working group: will define steps ahead to validate Hydrogen system, and delineate raodmap leading to first AFC module. This may include: -- prototyping of hydrogen system or critical parts thereof, incl. monitors -- safety review Similar road maps should be drawn for simulations, optics, RF tests, detector prototyping and beam test, etc..

MICE collaboration meeting Alain Blondel 27 – 10 - 2004 15 Assignments (Ctd) PAC2005: could all working group conveners discuss and prepare abstracts to be submitted to this big accelerator conference? Lets take advantage of this meeting to get this done.
