Kid Writing Strategies for use with your child’s Kid Writing Bags or the Discovery Homework Bags

Choosing the right picture to draw Your child should draw a picture that begins with the letter at the top of the paper. Pumpkin begins with P…

Formulating a sentence Take the words out of the bag Help your child formulate a simple sentence using the words from the bag. Using color words helps. A new word will be added to this bag weekly.

Kid Writing The child should copy the words on the line. Use the pom pom as the ‘meatball space’ between the words When the sentence is complete place the period at the end. Adult Writing –the adult then writes the sentence correctly under the child’s kid writing. Help your child to sound out words that are in the sentence that are not in the bag and encourage them to write the letters that they hear. Big - Bg

Independent Writing Children write their own pieces Risk-free environment Children know what they do is accepted and valued Writing becomes closer to adult writing as the teacher guides the process

Kid Writing Rubric Hot Air Balloon- Exceptional! Beyond the Standard –Most sentences are phonetically correct with vowels in correct positions –More than one phonetic sentence is present Bunch of Balloons – Great Work! Meets the Standard, Follows Teacher’s Directions thoroughly and masters the writing task –Most words contain beginning and ending sounds –Sentences contain three or more words –Meat Ball Spaces are present –Period at the end of the sentence –Picture matches the writing –Capital is present at the beginning of the sentence One Balloon – Almost there! –Each word is followed by appropriate spacing –A period is used at the end of the sentence
