 Children have 20mins daily discrete phonics lessons;  Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’.  They are then taught how to blend these units together to read the whole word;  The same sound can be represented differently. (E.G. ‘ee’ in ‘meet’ and ‘ea’ in ‘meat’

 Blending The sliding of letters together to form a word.  Segmenting The splitting up of words to help with spelling.  Sound talk  Phoneme: The smallest unit of sound in a word. cat shut  Diagraph: 2 letters making one sound (sh, ch, th)  Vowel diagraph (ai, ie)  Split diagraph. This is where a letter drops between a vowel diagraph. Smile

 We will teach your child new sounds each week, and the skills of segmenting and blending as soon as they know the first 6 sounds (s,a,t,p,i,n)  We will assess your child and send them an appropriate reading book  This may be a wordless book to begin with, if so further guidance will be sent with it  We will change the books once per week  We read with your child as often as possible  Your child needs to have their book bag EVERY DAY.  We will send homework books out each Friday

 You will need to read with your child regularly at home.  Please record in the orange reading record when you have read with your child.  The children have access to ‘bugclub’ an online reading program. Please find their login details on the front of their reading record.  Please help your child to complete their homework tasks, these will often be phonics based.  Homework books can also be used as a communication book, if you have any messages for the class teacher.  After half term we will be starting a reading club for reception. Please look out for further information.

 REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only way you become a good reader. Continue to read with your child regularly, practising phonics and also encourage them to:  Check reading makes sense, look at pictures clues.  Ask questions about the book;  Use the library. Have fun.  Encourage independence, allow children time to try.  Encourage them to use their sounds and actions to find the sound they need.  Children can practise their phonics by playing games online. The children particularly like www.phonicsplay.com
