1 Welcome to Guidance on the Development of Early Writing in Reception
Please make sure you have picked up a copy of the Development Matters Document and a phonics sound mat

2 Development Matters Writing
By the end of Reception your child is expected to... 40-60 1. Give meaning to marks they make as they draw, write and paint. 2. Begins to break the flow of speech into words. 3. Continues a rhyming string (cat, bat, sat) 4. Hear and say the initial sound in words (eye spy) 5. Segment the sounds in simple words and blend them together (Fred fingers) 6. Link sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet (A, a) 7. Use some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence. ELG 8. Write own name and other things such as labels, captions. 9. Attempt to write short sentences in meaningful contexts (e.g. I went to the park on Saturday) 10. Use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. 11. Also write some irregular common words. (red words e.g. the I no my me) 12. Write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. 13. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible.

18 From here on you can support your child’s progress in writing by...
Encouraging lots of fun fine motor skills activities Seeing all mark making as signs of writing (drawings, ‘scribbles’ etc) Praise your children whenever they put pen to paper and display it to show you are proud Practising letter formation using the rhymes on the phonics mat/cards Naming the letter names (alphabet) and sounds Rhyming games Eye spy Practise reading and writing words and sentence which are sent home If your child would like to write a sentence, support them in sounding out using ‘Fed fingers’ when they have finished write it correctly underneath sounding out to them as you do it. Most importantly ENJOY the writing process with your child!
