How Much Do You Know About Africa???

Area The U.S. (3.6 million sq. miles) fits into Africa (11.7 million sq. miles) about 3.2 times

Jungle? Africa is about 55% savanna grassland, 25% desert, and 10% rainforest. The “jungle” is located only around rivers where the sun can penetrate the canopy of the rainforest.

Tigers? There are no tigers in Africa, and less than 1% of the animal population Africa had in 1900 remains today.

Culture Groups There are over 700 different culture groups in Africa.

Seasonal Change There is little seasonal (temperature) change in Africa due to its tropical location. 90% of Africa is located in the tropics. Seasonal change usually consists of wet and dry seasons.

Country Africa is a CONTINENT with more countries than any other continent. There are 54 sovereign nations in Africa.

Afro? The Afro is a hair style that originated in the U.S.

Tribes? There are over 700 culture groups in Africa

Ethnic problems Nearly every African nation has had to deal with tension between different ethnic groups…Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Rwanda…….

Resources Africa has 70% of the world’s diamonds, 60% of the gold,40% of the water power, in addition to copper, uranium, tin, etc…

Housing? Africans live in all types of houses. The term hut came from European colonizers.

King of the Jungle? The female lion does most of the hunting.

Civilizations? Egypt, the West African Trading kingdoms…A lot of African history was preserved in the oral tradition.

Nile? The Nile is the longest river in the world. The Amazon has a lot more water volume.

Language Many Africans speak their tribal language, another tribal or regional language, a regional dialect (like Swahili), and a European language.

Natives Everybody is a native of some place, and the term should not apply only to Africans. There are people of different ethnicities, such as Arabs, Asians, and Europeans, who are natives of Africa.
