Do Now Kiowas Comanches Apaches Tonkawas

Group Plain tribes

What tribes were in the Plains Culture? The Tonkawas the Apaches, the Comanches, and the Kiowas were the major tribes in the Plains group.

Where did they live? The tribes were located in: –The central Texas plains and prairies –Other Southwest states such as Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico

What did the people in the Plains culture eat? These tribes relied heavily on hunting. They ate buffalos, deer, bear, antelope, elk, rabbits, turtles, and snakes. The Plains tribes were very good at hunting because they got horses from the Spanish in the 1500s.

Living dwellings The Kiowas lived in tepees made of tanned buffalo hides. They needed 20 skins and 20 poles in order to make a tepee. These tepees were very easy to move quickly, especially using horses. Were the Kiowas nomads/nomadic? Why/Why not?

Appearance Plains Native Americans wore clothes made out of buffalo skins. Comanche leaders were very well-dressed and would wear some of the same things as Europeans.

Culture Often at war Fought to protect their land and way of life. These warriors were brutal and would sometimes scalp their enemies’ heads.

Interesting fact The Kiowas recorded their culture by painting pictures of their history on buffalo hides. They also drew pictures on the walls of their tepees. The Comanches were divided into many smaller groups that each elected leaders, but all worked together.

Nomadic? Yes! Plains Indians followed herds Teepees and Horses allowed quick and easy travel
